I never did understand why Al Qaeda members and their sympathizers weren’t just treated like the criminals they are. But then you can't declare war on a secretive criminal organization? You coin a military sounding term “unlawful combatants” then go from there.

Ah, yes. The age old question. Terrorist or patriot? Old King George said that our "patriots" were nothing more than terrorists. Guess it's what side you are on. History will record what side you were on, winner or looser. Let's not get our knickers in too much of a twist on this. We, the US, should follow intenational law on this. Not make up our own rules. We have screwed the pooch on this too much.

Doesn't matter what they are called. Have to be dealt with one way or another.

The argument could be made that they are an invading army as their command and control are not Iraquies and are not in the contry. They follow orders which the last I heard the common criminal dosn't. Of course we could call them a gang, which dose follow orders form a command and control. If we do call it a gang we could bring the military home and trun the situation over to the LAPD. Just Joking!!! It is an army, it may be rag tag but an army none the less.

Actually I think it does natter what you call them. It informs how you deal with them and how their potential supporters view them which is important because anti-terrorism campaigns are won in the "hearts'n'minds" of the terrorist's community not on the battlefield.

No, that isn't the question. No one is in any doubt about them being terrorists ... the argument is whether they are "unlawful combatants" or simply criminals who ought to be treated as we have traditionally treated pirates. Cool
