I take my info from "Six days of War", a book widely accepted as an unbiased one. The helicopters were sent to rescue, not to shoot. Funny coincidence that you mention chess master. I just happen to be a professional chess player myself. Cheers. |

He also ordered that no aircraft be sent near Sinai. A CIA report on the incident issued June 13, 1967, also found that an overzealous pilot could mistake the Liberty for an Egyptian ship, the El Quseir. After the air raid, Israeli torpedo boats identified the Liberty as an Egyptian naval vessel. When the Liberty began shooting at the Israelis, they responded with the torpedo attack, which killed 28 of the sailors. The Joint Chiefs of Staff investigated the communications failure and noted that the Chief of Naval Operations expressed concern about the prudence of sending the Liberty so close to the area of hostilities and four messages were subsequently sent instructing the ship to move farther away from the area of hostilities. The JCS report said the messages were never received because of “a combination of (1) human error, (2) high volume of communications traffic, and (3) lack of appreciation of sense of urgency regarding the movement of the Liberty.” The report also included a copy of a flash cable sent immediately after the attack, which reported that Israel had “erroneously” attacked the Liberty, that IDF helicopters were in rescue operations, and that Israel had sent “abject apologies” and requested information on any other U.S. ships near the war zone. Initially, the Israelis were terrified that they had attacked a Soviet ship and might have provoked the Soviets to join the fighting.30 Once the Israelis were sure what had happened, they reported the incident to the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv and offered to provide a helicopter for the Americans to fly out to the ship and any help they required to evacuate the injured and salvage the ship. The offer was accepted and a U.S. naval attaché was flown to the Liberty. The Israelis were “obviously shocked” by the error they made in attacking the ship, according to the U.S. Ambassador in Tel Aviv. In fact, according to a secret report on the 1967 war, the immediate concern was that the Arabs might see the proximity of the Liberty to the conflict as evidence of U.S.-Israel collusion.30a Many of the survivors of the Liberty remain bitter, and are convinced the attack was deliberate as they make clear on their web site. In 1991, columnists Rowland Evans and Robert Novak trumpeted their discovery of an American who said he had been in the Israeli war room when the decision was made to knowingly attack the American ship.31 In fact, that individual, Seth Mintz, wrote a letter to the Washington Post on November 9, 1991, in which he said he was misquoted by Evans and Novak and that the attack, was, in fact, a "case of mistaken identity." Moreover, the man who Mintz originally said had been with him, a Gen. Benni Matti, does not exist. Also, contrary to claims that an Israeli pilot identified the ship as American on a radio tape, no one has ever produced this tape. In fact, the official Israeli Air Force tape clearly established that no such identification of the ship was made by the Israeli pilots prior to the attack. Tapes of the radio transmissions made prior, during and after the attack do not contain any statement suggesting the pilots saw a U.S. flag before the attack. During the attack, a pilot specifically says, “there is no flag on her!” The recordings also indicate that once the pilots became concerned about the identity of the ship, by virtue of reading its hull number, they terminated the attack and they were given an order to leave the area. You are taking the word of the culprit in the Liberty attack. That is like taking the word of the word of a murderer in a homicide case.
Why is telling the truth about an incident anti-semetic? Why, because it puts Israel in a bad light. Have you ever heard the accounts of the men who were victimized by the incident? Probably not. There account is completely different than the official story from the Israeli government. The Captain said he had the large national ensign raise and the ship was clearly marked as a USN ship in international waters. It is sickening how you defend the indefensible. The Israeli people sure like the 10 billion plus we send them every year and they sure like our military hardware. But they have the arrogance to deny any deliberate wrong doing in the Liberty incident. If the U.S. did not act as Israel's big brother, their land would once again be called Palestine. Let me know when you hear the actual accounts of the survivors of the Liberty incident. Your state of denial about the Liberty incident would be like me as an American trying to deny the truth about the My Lai incident. Face the facts Israel purposely and deliberately hosed down that ship with machine gun fire and other ordnance. |

yes the IAF did shoot up the liberty...but just the fact that two flights of jets did not carry the proper ordinance to actually sink her (a couple of 500lb bombs would have done the job in mere minutes) shows that it was not planned attack but one of "opportunity." the kind of thing that has been happening since modern warefare began, including american and british aircraft shooting up their own during WWII. (on much slower aircraft) up to the gulf war The liberty survivors would have no special knowledge of what the pilots knew or saw, they would just know they were attacked by the IAF. and the israeli govt admitted the mistake and paid out compensation. |

NUMPTY? Okay, I went a little far saying 'end of subject'. Do you forget me? Hey, were you really in His Majesty's Army? Kewl if so, never talked to a Brit. What I was actually doing sir is demonstrating the Democratic Party's ability to shut down items that they feel are over reference any discussion, e.g., the Left's ending of discussion on the War On Terror, namely the US losing same before it is even over, and any other subject that is 'sensitive', like Senator Ubama's big ears, Hillary's laundering illegal monies through Hsu, Murtha's illegal activity in a sting where he agreed to take money as a bribe, and the list goes on for a long time. I have never been an attorney or a general or an attorney general, but when something is as clear as what is said about the NSA stated, why are we discvussing it. It's okay a77, I only picked your post because it sounded to me like you are irate with Israel for an acknowledged accident by every one in the world but some of the guys who were blown up, and you. I can see why they might still feel tender. Even if my dad accidentally shot my anus out of my back pocket, I would probably always be thinking..."Did he do that because he said I would pay for not taking the garbage out?". Points to ponder... I believe the Captain is not lying but could you at least consider that the Israeli pilots did not get close enough to the ship to "see" a flag with their eyes before their rounds tore the deck of that ship to pieces, including the flag and pole or mechanism used in supporting it? And your comment about Israel being Palestine if it weren't for us, I believe Israel kicked 27 Arab nations' rectum all over the Middle East W/O the good ole USA, and if we had not talked Israel down several times since then, they would have done it again and again. There is nothing stopping the radical Muslims in those 27 Arab nations around Israel from going and gett'in them some more but fear and air !  Why is overwhelming evidence so hard to believe? We have sold or supplied Isreal quite a few weapons over the years and how does Isreal repay us They back engineer the weapons and sell the technology to China and others. The Harpoon anti-ship missle is produced by China as the Silkworm and sold to all comers including Iran. Same with the Maverik and a host of other weapons systems. With friends like that you don't need enemies.

Israel is out ally, and Syria is not and cannot be as long as it is a sponsor of international terrorism, sponsors the murder of residents of Israel including Americans, continues to keep Lebanon a sewer of strife, murder and another exporterer of terrorism, and on and on. Get some credibility by ascribing the majority of the responsibility of the violence to the sponsors of terrorism. Might keep the odor of anti-semitism off some posts. |

CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG. The Israelis got one of those Silkworm anti-ship missiles shoved up the "aft" of one of their gun boats when they made their latest trip up north into Lebanon. A hezballoh gun crew provided the "wake-up call..." Arrogance can be costly... SO, IF TRUE. What goes around sometimes comes around when you deal with devil... Stop your "gun" dealings with China!!!
