Someone was not using their checklists, not to mention the continual chain of reciepts for the darn things.

This will get a lot more air time than it really deserves. The weapons could not be armed unless proper codes are issued. B-52s used to carry live weapons all the time, so this wasn't an imminent nuclear accident waiting to happen. Maybe it was supposed to be a captive-carry mission. Maybe it was supposed to just transport the missiles without the W-80s and a line of folks screwed up. Maybe the paperwork wasn't done so therefore, the weapons were not "accounted for".

deimos444 - what do you mean as an ex-SSgt this doesn't surprise you? As an ex-SAC guy, it surprises the hell outta me.

Subtle Saber rattling for Iran and our other foes or letting the media feed info to the enemies? Why do we need to know this? Can't people hold their cards a little closer to the chest?

Can not believe this happened...why worry about terrorists when we can "accidently" nuke the USA into oblivion. Afterwards the Defense Department can say: OOOOOPPPPPPPSSSSSS.................tisjustme61@military.com

Yes but many US Americans don't have maps as in whereas we should help the people of Iraq and South Africa.

So many questions! Where were the sky cops? Did the load team even know what they had? Was the 781 entries made? Sounds like a ferry mission gone bad. No harm, no foul!

What's the big problem with a B-52 having nukes on board and flying over the USA? The B-52 was meant to carry nukes.

If the bird crashed the worst that would happen would be a little radition leak until the mess could be cleaned up. The danger from the fuel on the B-52 is much worse than the bombs.

The crew was told to load the missles, WTF is the problem? Why would you decertify the crews?

The most states they could have flown over is 5.

This quote really does bother me though.

The plane was carrying Advanced Cruise Missiles from Minot Air Force Base, N.D, to Barksdale Air Force Base, La., on Aug. 30, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of a Defense Department policy not to confirm information on nuclear weapons.

If it is defense dept policy not to comfirm info on nukes, why the hell are they opening their mouths? Either make it official or shut the F up.

Cleatus, how could you have left out, Rove, the VP, the neo cons. I bet Bush was going to use one of the missles to fire on an American city and then blame it on Iran. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Hell, there are quite a few organizations on the bae that would have known about this movement. Just getting them to the jet in the first place is one HUGE headache. As far as decerting the crews.... COME ON! Your telling me they didnt know what they were handling? BULLS***!! IT IS PRETTY FREAKING OBVIOUS when you are working with the real deal. There needs to be some serious investigation into this one. Sounds like we only got one little piece of the puzzle.

I.Y.A.A.Y.A.S.!!!!

you are correct the base commander has the authority to release nukes, however they weren't planning on moving nukes just the cruise missiles without the war heads. So i doubt he had the same amount of knowledge and oversight. I agree that people should have known. Wouldnt the pilots notice the plane was heavier on one side? Or that they had less fuel due to the extra weight. Did the muns guys grab the wrong ones? WTF

Well, Geez. If the nukes were being transported to another facility, what better way than by air
rather than ground. I mean, everyone knows that air travel is safer than ground, right?
