As an ex AF Staff Sgt this does not surprise me.
The question in my mind is why not refuel and fly on over to iran for a little practice run.
Live fire, of course.

Well, you see, sir, its like this...

We kinda forgot that we were actually transporting live nukes across the country and didn't take the, ah, appropriate safety measures.

Do you think this will affect my evaluation report?

And let's make sure we tell everyone all of our fighters and bombers will stand down in the US on Sep 14 to "review" procedures. Let's not have any CAPs up on that day.

If a tree falls in a forest and lands on a politician, even if you can't hear the tree or the screams, I'll bet you'd at least hear the applause.

Exactly. And, the matter of the nukes should have been kept under wraps or at least until the investigation was completed. This is why our country is in so much trouble because the press has there nose in everything.

Holy Crap Batman, the fact that they would broadcast this information scares me more than the accidental loading of the nuke.

Well, the squadron commander was rightfully fired. I'd also go after the superintendent.

It's almost impossible for this to have happened by accident.

Don't those things have to be armed before using?

Actually, the press only reports what is given to them. If you will note wording of quote:

“WASHINGTON - A B-52 bomber was mistakenly armed with six nuclear warheads and flown for more than three hours across several states last week, prompting an Air Force investigation and the firing of one commander, Pentagon officials said Wednesday. “

Again, "Pentagon officials said Wednesday." Here is a clear case of exercise by jumping to conclusions, based on an inability to read and comprehend what is in print.

There is nothing classified about this. Repeat, nothing classified. There are no secrets here. In other words, this is unclassified. NO biggie, except for the clowns who forgot what the pods contained. End of story. Sheesh! Another conspiracy of the third estate put to bed. Have a good day!~~! Cool

A nosy press corps is your best friend, out of site out of mind is no way to keep tabs on your government...

Its the government (civilian and military) that leaks information about technology and operations. Keep in mind, most of these leaks are completely intentional, although some not.

This is just a screwup that wasn't going to be easily covered up, so somebody made the decision to come clean...

But if you want to blame Katie Couric for the numerous strategic and tactical blunders of this administration, go ahead if it makes you feel any better....

So what! I thought thats what the B-52's were for in the first place. I agree with a previous comment, too bad they didnt continue to Iran and accidently drop them there. Then we could say OOPS!

I don't care if the darned things were armed or not. Knowing that they were transported across half the US is still scary. I don't know if the crash of that B-52 would have set the nukes off, but who wants to find out? It also seems to me that there are more than several states between ND and LA.

Guess they couldn't find any enlisted men to fire so they canned the commander.

Were the Pilot and Navigator, relatives of a certain Miss America Contestant, from South Carolina? Could they even recognize the location of the U.S. on a map??

OK, first of all firing the Munitions Squadron Commander is a cop out. While he is the owner of the account on paper, the SINGLE FOCAL POINT for the asset is the BASE COMMANDER. He is the only person that has the authority to release nukes for any reason. If they are being moved for maintenance or any other reason HE knows about it. Hell, there are quite a few organizations on the bae that would have known about this movement. Just getting them to the jet in the first place is one HUGE headache. As far as decerting the crews.... COME ON! Your telling me they didnt know what they were handling? BULLS***!! IT IS PRETTY FREAKING OBVIOUS when you are working with the real deal. There needs to be some serious investigation into this one. Sounds like we only got one little piece of the puzzle.

Who cares? Not me its good training! As long as its not blamed on the enlisted ordnance man, this incident will be the last mistake made for along time involving transferring nukes. Mad
