More than 100 nations have reached an agreement on a treaty which would ban current designs of cluster bombs.

Diplomats meeting in Dublin agreed to back an international ban on the use of the controversial weapons following 10 days of talks.

But some of the world's main producers and stockpilers - including the US, Russia and China - oppose the move.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown called it a "big step forward to make the world a safer place".

He announced earlier that Britain would be taking cluster bombs out of service.

The final draft of the treaty went before delegates from a total of 109 countries on Wednesday afternoon.

Honestly dough, unless we, Russia, China and Israel get on board; this treaty has no impact! Popcorn

And that picture proves what?
One high explosive is much like another to human flesh. Cluster bomb or 2000 lb bomb, both mangle flesh and shatter bone.

Guided vs. dummy, and percentage of unexploded ordinance left lying around………

To this day about 200 people a year in Laos are killed and maimed by bomblets.
Most are not playing with them, they are plowing a field, diging a fence post, or any of the seemingly inocent activities of life, when boom their leg is gone.
It is estimated that 40% of Laos has about 23 million bomblets laying around waiting to hurt someone.
As a plane captain on a carrier in 1969, I sent many CBU's off. I never expected that almost 40 years later the actions of our crews
would still be harming people.
I see these weapons as a very bad thing but I cannot support a ban on a weapon that is so effictive against the enemy. I wish I had a better option but I dont.

There is no such thing as a humane weapon. Only the deluded think that there is. Banning an effective weapon system because somebody may get hurt by it is silly.

When enemy armor is advancing on my pos I wat DPICM available to stop them. Or are you willing to sacrifice my life to ease your conscience?

Nobody said there was! But we should all strive towards minimizing civilian casualties!

There are dozens of other weapon systems that can stop that hypothetical armor in its tracks.
As there are many western armies around the world that don’t use cluster bombs. Are you suggesting they don’t care about their troops?

That is a highly inappropriate picture. Can you cite anywhere what hurt that child? I dought it. I bet that kid got hit by a suicide bomber. As a former grunt cluster bombs are our friends because they kill the enemy. We are currently not using cluster bombs because of the COIN type of war were fighting. Also our cluster bombs unlike Russia's cluster bombs don't resemble toys. They look like what they are. A BOMB.

Actually our country cares more about its troops than any other country in the world. Can you show or prove where it says that cluster bombs fail any more than mortars or artillery or 40mm grenade launchers? If they fail just as much do you advocate us getting rid of mortars and artillery as well?

Here's a better idea how about you get with some people to try and ban suicide bombers because they kill far more people than cluster bombs do.

After signing the treaty Germany began right away with the scrapping process of its arsenal of cluster bombs (probably a symbolic move). After all we were the ones to invent these bastardly weapons.

What anoys me however is the fact, that all participating countries have 8 years time to finish the process. I know every treaty comes with compromises but thats a bit too much.
