WASHINGTON – The most common deals under the government's $3 billion Cash for Clunkers program, aimed at putting more fuel-efficient cars on the road, replaced old Ford or Chevrolet pickups with new ones that got only marginally better gas mileage, according to an analysis of new federal data by The Associated Press.
The single most common swap — which occurred more than 8,200 times — involved Ford F150 pickup owners who took advantage of a government rebate to trade their old trucks for new Ford F150s. They were 17 times more likely to buy a new F150 than, say, a Toyota Prius. The fuel economy for the new trucks ranged from 15 mpg to 17 mpg based on engine size and other factors, an improvement of just 1 mpg to 3 mpg over the clunkers. <snip>

What stupid people!!!

If only there was a smart car version of a pickup. I bet they would have sold a million of them. Mad

Course to carry the same load you would have to take 15 trips to the home depot vs 1.

Even though you would end up using more energy/carbon emissions the MMGW group would have felt better.

That is what is important!!!! Mad FEEL GOOD VS FACTS!!!!

Ah the Federal Gov't. Hey wait a moment. Isn't Obama the head man of the Federal Gov't? I'll stick with my Tundra. The only thing I want from the Federal Gov't is my monthly check. I earned that much.

an
There are loads of more efficient pickups out there than the antediluvian Ford F150, but most of them are practical 4x4s with sensible diesel engines rather than ridiculous and profligate V8s and therefore won't be touched by F150 drivers Wink. Let's be honest there can't be many people who really buy one for it's practicality, they buy an image just as much as a BMW driver does (or a Prius driver for that matter, there's non hybrids out there that are very nearly as efficient after all).

I do use mine! I currently have a 2000 Silverado 4X4 and plan on replacing it with a Ford or Toyota once I have too. When that time comes, you can bet that it will not be a GM or Dodge product. Ford and Toyota did not take any gov handouts and then turnaround and go bankrupt anyway. They already have some of my money and they will not get any more.

Having driven in America I'd say "rude drivers" applies to pickup drivers in general. Big Grin And as for dirty, noisy etc? What do you expect? Your diesel technology is years behind the rest of the world because there's a lot of people who'd rather see you burn petrol at <20mpg.

I just put 177 miles on my new 2010 Camry Hybrid. My average MPG was 39.3 @ between 65 and 70 MPH. Total cost out the dealership's lot was $29,377.( Fully loaded) Beat that GM or Ford.

Easy, my Focus Zetec does ~50-55 mpg(US) on the motorway. It is an oil-burner though Wink , and not exactly rapid at 11sec to 60mph. I'm told the petrol version's m-way economy is in the high thirties (US gal) so not quite as good. Bit cheaper though at about $25,000.
Now that GM has decided to hold on to Vauxhall/Opel in Europe you can expect to see some of their new generation of low pressure turbo-petrols crossing the Atlantic your way and they're rumoured to be very efficient.

Nope, the "trade ins", had to have their engines destroyed by running them without oil or running them with silica sand put into the crank case...
