WASHINGTON -- Spending by lawmakers on taxpayer-financed trips abroad has risen sharply in recent years, a Wall Street Journal analysis of travel records shows, involving everything from war-zone visits to trips to exotic spots such as the Galápagos Islands.
The spending on overseas travel is up almost tenfold since 1995, and has nearly tripled since 2001, according to the Journal analysis of 60,000 travel records. Hundreds of lawmakers traveled overseas in 2008 at a cost of about $13 million. That's a 50% jump since Democrats took control of Congress two years ago.

Congress NEEDS to travel in order to become better informed on the issues that they are voting on. With all that's happened since 9/11 both domestically and internationally, I'm not surprised that their travel has increased. By far most of it is legitimate, but there are always some "boondoogles" that get most of the attention. In order to get a true picture on their travel, you would need to see complete run-down of the trips.

That being the case, perhaps they should travel MORE ... and take some of that legislation along to read on the trip.

If that is the case, they should be spending lots of time stateside and learning what we the citizens have issues with.Few if any, know what we the average Americans have to deal with. Give them the same options as we have such as SS and it would be fixed yesterday!
