For real evidence of Iranian interference in Iraq, one could do worse than to look at the support given to Maliki by Iran in his fight against Al Sadr.
His Chubbyness wants in on the political process because he has some seriously solid grass-roots support in Sadr City and Basra in the South of Iraq, and there's a lot of power and money up for grabs. Maliki by comparison, is leading a bunch of loosely associated groups that are apt to turn their backs on him at the drop of a head-scarf.
Overall though, Iran is the only winner in all of this whichever way the chips fall from here on in..... Which probably explains the 'more-war to end the war' rhetoric coming from the Bush Administration.

Yeah, Almadinajad was recently welcomed to Bagdad by Maliki himself, and to add to the irony was protected by 150 US Marines. Big Grin

I must say, while I have no use for Sadr, I also find him funny at times. Like he's in Iran now supposedly studying for his Mullahship. Apparently all he's got to so far is Mullah 101.

Or take that ex ally of ours Challabi. After screwing us out of hundreds of millions of dollars, he deposited it all in Tehran, and has the balls to claim he never liked us in the first place.

Sheesh, talk about denial.

Wait till Maliki gives us the shaft and someone on this board will happily post that he changed his mind about us, because of his subscription to the NY Times... Big Grin

Dave
A -jad was recently welcomed in Ny and lectured at a university.. what's your point?.. I'm not jumping on the roller coaster of Yay!... Oh Crap.. this time.. for what it's worth the terms of the cease fire as stated seem to give gov't forces unopposed run of Sadr City.. but Al Masri, as stated earlier was captured near Mosul... NOT! so we shall see....

Following are the main points of the agreement:

* Gunmen loyal to Sadr in his eastern Baghdad stronghold of Sadr City must lay down their arms within four days of the truce, which takes effect from Saturday.

* No one is entitled to obstruct Iraqi security forces from entering Sadr City, a Shi'ite slum home to 2 million people.

* The government must restore control over Sadr City.

* All blocked roads in Sadr City will be opened to allow emergency aid to be brought to residents and for the wounded to be evacuated.

* Security forces may search Sadr City for wanted "outlaws" and arrest any of them. Security forces must first produce an arrest warrant.

* Militiamen must stop firing mortars and rockets at areas such as the Green Zone diplomatic and government compound.

* Weapons belong only in the hands of the government, not individuals.

* The government has the right to raid any place it suspects of containing weapons.

FOOTNOTE: Iraqi law allows each household to have one gun.

why do I get the feeling that the 'one gun' per household would be a crew served weapon of some sort?

According to Juan Cole, Maliki had demanded that the Mahdi Army militia that serves as the Sadrist paramilitary give up its arms and dissolve itself.
The compromise simply states that the Iraqi security forces would be allowed in to Sadr City to search for suspected medium and heavy weapons.
The implication is that the Mahdi Army may continue to exist and may keep its light weapons (e.g. AK-47s), though it has to pledge not to walk with them in public.

As I recall, apart from Maliki's political ambitions, the actions in Sadr City are mainly aimed at stopping the indirect fire attacks on the Green Zone/IZ.

Leave their AKs when going out in public? I thought their religion strictly forbade nudity...
