"As Washington reels from the news of 10.2 percent unemployment, the Center for Responsive Politics is out with a new report describing the wealth of members of Congress.
Among the highlights: Two-hundred-and-thirty-seven members of Congress are millionaires. That’s 44 percent of the body – compared to about 1 percent of Americans overall." "http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1109/29235.html" |

4 of the top 5 are Democrats CRP says California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa is the richest lawmaker on Capitol Hill, with a net worth estimated at about $251 million. Next in line: Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), worth about $244.7 million; Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.), worth about $214.5 million; Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), worth about $209.7 million; and Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), worth about $208.8 million. I know the Washington Times did an article in 2007 which showed which party's Politicians had the most Millionaires |

I just checked the above referenced web page -- it's been deleted. Significant! Don't condemn the libs, EAG154. There is plenty of blame to go around. The most important thing is to get the lobbying money out of the mix -- all of them will trade their convictions (if they have any) for cash. Also, when asked why he went into politics, a local New York City pol answered: "Did you ever meet a poor politician?" |

Yeaaaaaaaaa,
The difference between people like me and the congress critters is simple, I worked for my money and they have been worked for theirs. How does a politician that makes 60K a year end up being a millionare?? They are on the take, prostituting themselves and the public whenever they can. Hush money, votes bought for special interest..on and on... next time one of them gets caught taking a bribe, heres a great idea>> Lets execute him or her. This message has been edited. Suppose you were an idiot, and suppose you were a member of Congress; but I repeat myself.
Mark Twain Twain had it right a long time ago. |

There is no distinctly American criminal class -- except Congress.

And we can't get term limits. Since 44% are or have become millionaires, it is pretty obvious term limits will never see the light of day. An interesting statistic would be how many went into Congress with a median income and became millionaires while in office. The whole system has become corrupt beyond repair. BYW world_king, something we CAN agree on. I write articles for the local newspaper and one of the subjects a few months ago was the similarity of the Fall Of The Roman Empire and todays state of politics.

There is a problem with term limits: the congressional staffs. With term limits, the inexperienced members of congress will be forced to rely more heavily on their experienced staffs. The staff members, never having to face election, may well be more self-seeking than their respective bosses, the members of congress. Let's keep it as it is. It ain't good now but we might just make it worse. |
