We pulled out of Bagdad and yet it still happens and it will continue long after we've pulled out of Irag altogether. There is no win-win solution here, it's religion not politics. I see here recently so many are comparing Vietnam with today, actually today is more in line with the troubles in Northern Ireland, not by governments but by sectarian violence hell bent on having a majority religious government.

SignalSgt,

We may not agree on many issues but your post is close to my thinking (that should be a shock to both of us, lol). Well said!

You don't plant a seed and expect it to grow in to a oak tree with in a day. A few car bomb's will force the people to see who and what is really happening. Force a boot up The prime minister AZZ to get something done. Force the Iraqi military to fight. Iraq is need's to be united sad to say there only way to do this is to have something major that effect's them all. Hopefully these bomb's will force the people to get up and take a stand against AQ.

The Iraqi's wanted us out of there. They wanted the traffic barriers taken down. They said they were ready to handle matters. Pretty much they said "kiss-off" we have it under control... the bad guys have just been saying "oh yeah"? - maybe after a few hundred more dead innocents they'll finally get the picture and squash these azzholes. they know who the head of the snake is, now it is time to defang the basturd.

yep this is what 400 plus guys died for, what we spent a trillion bucks to get.

Saddam was no Thomas Jefferson in by any means but this sh-t wasn't going on. Other than the Dick Cheney abd Bill Crystal's of the world that were bothered by his just existing was he really bothering "us"?

But then Halibuton and Blackwater have and continue to make Billions off this adventure and some would say that was the point of the exercise all along!

The Iraqis have taken a stand against the violence.

Somewhere in the high 90% of Iraqis are against the insurgency and al Qaeda is even less popular. But the insurgency and al Qaeda continue to kill, kidnap and intimidate Iraqis everyday.

Lesson to be learned: winning the hearts and minds of the people does not defeat an insurgency of religious fanatics.

What makes anyone think that a counter insurgency strategy will result in any better results in Afghanistan?

Even though the Iraqi security forces have a tradition of a national army and an effective police force, they will not be able to defeat the insurgency or al Qaeda.

It has taken Iraqi security forces years and billions of American dollars to get to this point where they are merely incompetent rather than incompetent and ineffective.

Lesson to be learned: training and equipping indigenous security forces will not result in the defeat of a radically religious insurgency.

What makes anyone think that Afghani forces will be able to take on the Taliban within the next generation?
