I believe the last time a three star was picked to be vice Army Chief of Staff was Harold K. Johnson in 1964.

Lt. Gen. Peter Chiarelli was confirmed by the full Senate Wednesday to receive his fourth star and become the 32nd [strikevice[/strike] chief of staff of the Army.

He will replace Gen. Dick Cody, who will retire in August after 36 years of service.

The Senate Armed Services Committee on May 22 held a confirmation hearing for Odierno and Petraeus but has not yet voted on their confirmations.

  • Vice Chief, NOT Chief. Chiarelli replaces Cody, not Casey.

Yep. I may be wrong, but I think GEN Cody was a LTG as the Deputy G-3, before he was picked as Vice Chief. It appears that Vice Chief of Staff may be one of the standard slots for a newly-promoted 4-star.

I'm a bit curious as to what will happen to Dempsey. He's now the acting commander at CENTCOM. In the quest for four stars, it appears he is the only one left out of the loop, at least so far.

You, Sir, are a gentleman - asleep OR awake. I'm glad you made the post. I was wondering what Chiarelli's future was. If you see something projecting Dempsey's next assignment, please post it also.
