My only hope is they beat the stupid out of Mr. Monbiot so that he doesn't attempt to take the law into his own hands in the future.

You would be surprised how much one remembers a good blow to the temple with a night stick. Puts everything into perspective very quickly.

STORY:
John Bolton, the former US ambassador to the United Nations, faces a citizen's arrest when he addresses an audience at the Hay Festival in Wales this evening.

George Monbiot, the journalist and activist, is planning the action because he believes Mr Bolton is a "war criminal".

I don't know about arresting him but I think I'd happily join in with any mob that wanted to give the egregious Bolton a ducking in the Wye and I'm sure there's some of THEM from Hereford who'd join in as well.
In short Monbiot might be a bit of a scrote but Bolton's a worse one and Monbiot's got fewer people killed.

Maybe, maybe not. War protestors are notorious for getting people killed... it's hard to say the impact of said "activism."

Besides, if we arrest every government official who got someone killed through military action, I'm afraid the prisons would be overwhelmed.

Just how stupid is this?

Now what was the guy going to do with Ambassador Bolton if he did initiate a citizens arrest? Personally I would have just kept walking.

So is Yosemite Sam.

He may be a 'good guy' but he makes noises like an idiot. Bolton speaking at a literary festival? That's like Yosemite talkin' to the Heshuns'. "Dad-blast the varmints!'

Bet he cancels.

There's truth in that but then there wouldn't be war protesters if there weren't idiot politicians prepared to start wars.

I don't know whether your familiar with Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe novels but there's a bit in Rifles where Sgt Harper says:
quote:
Ah, God love you, sir; I thought you would've known. There's two kinds of officers, sir: killing officers and murdering officers. Killing officers are poor ol' buggers that kill you by mistake. Murdering officers are mad, bad ol' buggers who get you killed on purpose. For a reason, for a country, for a religion, maybe even for a flag.

(I believe that Cornwell in turn paraphrased one of the Peninsular soldier-writers)

I'd say there are similarly two kinds of politicians, the kind whom events force them t get people killed - the killin' politicos - and the other sort who manufacture events and get people killed on purpose.
Bolton, needless to say falls into the latter camp and I firmly believe that if there was some comeback for murderin' politicos, rather than lucrative speaking tours and cushy directorships then they might not conspire to get quite as many people, both squaddy and civvy, killed.

Nah ... didn't happen. Spoke for an hour and a half.

Security guards blocked the path of columnist and activist George Monbiot, who tried to make the arrest as Mr Bolton left the stage.

After being released by the guards the columnist - a fierce critic of the 2003 American-led invasion - made a dash through the rain-soaked tented village in a failed attempt to catch up with Mr Bolton.

George Monbiot...
Wonder if that is French for "MOONBAT"?...

Oh dear, an hour and a half of Bolton? I thought Hay was scraping the barrel when they had Clinton there to flog his book, the festival really has gone down hill since I last went.
That said there are always bargains to be had in the town post-festival so I might wander on up there next week - if I can scrape together enough beer-tokens for the petrol that is.

Hey ... most of it was Q&A. No accounting for British taste. There must have been a bunch of springbutts in the crowd.

I understand that it was lunchtime, and the British will do anything to avoid having to eat, you know...English food. Eek

Not eaten in Britain lately then have you? Anyway Hay-on-Wye is (just) in Wales so it would be Welsh food. There's some pretty good pub food in Hay and mercifully not a McChunders or Burger King within ten miles. Two or three years ago the caterer for the Festival had at least one Michelin star.
