For those of you that have been to Giessen, remember the tower that was on top of the huge hill that sat around 10 miles to the north of the city? I used to mountain bike to the top of it everyday, those are some memories, I sure to miss that area at times....

I believe I read recently that the AAFES Distribution Center is going to remain there, and active. I worked there up until about three years ago and they were running strong with the local national employees far outweighing the US employees. So I don't see them leaving anytime soon. |

I was station at the rock with 3/5 Cav in '95, did the first Bosnia tour with them from Dec '95 - Nov '96. Once we were back we closed KG and moved the works to Friedburg as 1/36 Inf....they re-opened Giessen then and it was probably early summer of '97. We did our second Bosnia tour, came back and did the garrison deal for a couple years. Kosovo kicked off and back to Yugo land we went again. I ETS'd as an E-6 in '02 at the Giessen depot. Worked around there for a couple years as a civy and finally came back stateside. I loved that area, really hate to see good times end there......

I was in 59th Ordnance Brigade (11B security platoons) for 11 1/2 years and Giessen was our support. From Bueren & Munster to Giessen was a day off from work. It's hard to believe it's gone! Many fond memories of the trips and of just being someplace "American".

Good bye Giessen... Only saw you once but you are joining the ranks of so many others these past 20 years.
8th ID already gone for a long time. So is Mainz-Finthen, MZ-Wackernheim, and all the other 8th barracks |

I'm one of the Germans marrying an American, one of my kids was born in Schweinfurt.
Even though we don't NEED the American presence anymore, it's sad to see them go because they enriched the life a lot...Americans sometimes seem to have more fun than Germans. And your financial influence on the economy should not be underestimated as well...a lot of business owners were very much American soldier (and US family) oriented. I grew up in Germany surrounded by Americans, I couldn't imagine my home without them. |

I am wondering why we are leaving. Maybe more troops are needed in Iraq and Afghanistan?
Therefore not enough to man the fort? |

Not the troops... no more money... Iraq is sucking it all in. It's why we had the last BRAC as well. And why the Guard and Reserves will get the big green one. |

I know one young buck sergeant that needs to do a little homework on why we were in Germany. It's also a bit of a stretch to compare Iraq with Germany in the late 40s. Giessen was but one of a long series of locations that were needed to be maintained to ensure our safety and that of our allies. Retake 11th grade history and this time stay awake.

I was at Sheridan Kasern in Augsburg in 1955 & the early part of 1956 with the 5th Inf. Div. when we were part of an operation called Gyroscope and were replaced with the 11th Airborne. I never heard if Sheridan or any of the other kaserns in Augsburg are still open or if the also closed.

I was stationed in Germany for over 15 years and enjoyed every minute of it. I was there in June of this year and almost everything has been turned over to the German government. Spent 2.5 years at Ayers Kaserne but it is now locked up tighter than a drum. I did notice that Friedberg still has a US military presence. The old Ferris Barracks in Erlangen is a German industrial area now.
Many fond (and then some NOT so fond) memories of good ol' Deutschland. Spent a LOT of time in Hohenfels, Grafenwoehr, and Wildflecken until I got smart and left combat arms units... |

I was stationed in the area for 6 years with 3d AD. It was a great area, but I have to disagree with the closing and removal of our troops all over Europe. The action will bite us in the butt eventually.

The Army has been closing Kasernes for over 15 years now. My old base, Babenhausen, was turned over to the German's last year and they are making a Tech park out of it.
We should keep bases in Iraq and Kuwait to help stablize this oil rich area. Hopefully we sill be there for over 60 years and will develope like the German-American relation did. |

My father was stationed in Friedburg from 1998-2001... Giessen American High School is the only High School I claim... It makes me teary to think that a part of my childhood is gone... Giessen may no longer be ours, but the Giessen Griffins will remember...
