And the civilians should have to pay for an Army mistake of monumental proportions?
Respectfully, SUNLINER81

Good lesson for the Corps of Engineers ... next time Surf City wants more sand for their beach, tell them to go get their own.

When the next hurricane hits them maybe the Govt should tell them to fix it themselves.

The Corps of Engineers should remove the sand.
Second, the Corps of Engineers DOESN'T KNOW, where UXO has been dumped? Aw come on, some body just scr-wed the pooch and didn't do the home work.
Admit the mistake and fix it, before some poor kid finds one that's still live and gets maimed or killed...
Respectfully, SUNLINER81

Not NO, but he!! NO. Time for the Corps of Engineers to step up and fund their own mistakes.

I don't mean to make light of this situation but this story made me laugh. I feel really sorry for the residents but this behavior is typical Army bureaucracy.

Hello I am from the government and I am here to help you... Eek

Forger mine dectors, let them use bayonets to poke around with.
The town could have an "adopt a bomb" program

Why should the town pay for the Corp of Engineers mistake. If our Gov. sends money overseas to other countries, then they can afford to pay for there own mistakes here at home! Its time the Gov. listened to the people.

Even so, visitors since then have found about a dozen more munitions, the Army Corps says. The Army has an ordnance specialist at the beach full time to take charge of discovered explosives.

Talk about a nice assignment, especially when you consider the other sandbox that most of them are assigned to right now.

The USACOE will not apologize in any case because the U.S. Government "does not make mistakes".

Don't believe me?

Just ask the Internal Revenue Service to apologize the next time they erronously tell you your tax return is FUBAR. Roll Eyes

"Army Corps spokesman Khaalid Walls said local governments are routinely asked to help pay for projects.

"That's protocol. All our projects are cost-shared," Walls said. "

The problem is, this isn't a "project". It is fixing COE's fskup.

This little mishap is GREAT! Now we have a training area for new troops being deployed to Iraq to hone their skills of mine detection. Add a few trip wires in the surf and Wallah! More lives saved with hands on experience.

That time has long since past ... and for most purposes gone for good. As for the beach bombs ... I kinda feel that the army should pick up the bill as it was their mistake, and seeing as how so much money is lost overseas it seems they could spend a little at home. That being the case, I agree also with the comment that in the case of a hurricane, they should remember just who comes in to rebuild and protect!

I couldn't have said it better.

The Army constantly rambles on about "Personal Responsibility", "Integrity", and the like... But when it comes time for them to exercise it - The excuses start falling like rain.

Admit your mistakes. Own up to them. Period.
