The melee, which students said started around noon Friday between rival black and Hispanic gangs, forced authorities to shut down Locke High School and keep students in their
Tensions between blacks and hispanics, have been brewing for a long, long time and have spilled over many times in the past, so this is nothing new... Respectfully, SUNLINER81

Yeah, it's nationalism in a sick and twisted sort of way. The blacks are pizzed at the hispanics for showing up and taking jobs for cheaper than they can do it and the mexican maffia has started a war to drive the blacks out of latino neighborhoods, because they are "Americanos" and the "traditional" for lack of a better term, black street gangs are in direct competition, plus it has to do with "La Raza", the race and getting and keeping the neighborhoods all hispanic... Crazy azzed stuff... The funny thing is, that the area known as "south central", was actually named for a section of Central Blvd, the southern portion of it and the few immediate blocks on either side of it. It used to be the center for black music, society and a source of black pride and dignity in the Los Angeles area. Though it was segregated, as were all areas at that time in our country, it was the model black community of the area... Most people don't understand how far back the "troubles" and how many generations it spans in "South Central". I lived there during the Watts riots in '65, talk about crazy then, try being a caucasian kid in Compton! Brother you had a battle field radar and were fast or you were one dead duck!... well i somewhat understand... i went to a middle school for a year that was 2 blocks away from the projects....
I went to a Baptist parochial school from first grade, the second time through, yea I flunked first grade, through the sixth and I did k and first at Abraham Lincoln elementary. The real eye opener came, when I went to Roosevelt junior high school, seventh and eighth, now there was an eye opener. I never made a turn in a hallway at the corner, I had to go wide and around in the middle, the first two times I went or tried to, around at the corner, I got a fist in the face. I literally had one kid just turn in the hall and punch me after telling his partner, "I hate whites, they are all so damn smug and smart acting!", yup, I done been there and done that... And that, is the nicest of the things that I had done to me, the other things were far worse... Respectfully, SUNLINER81

Actually at one time, yeah, but that was a long time ago, but I can remember those days. I also remember the "Big Red Cars", commonly known by the name of the company, Pacific Electric Railway and I can remember when the City Hall, WAS the tallest building in town, the Union Ice company came around in big blue trucks with white lettering on the side and everyone had a trash "incinerator" in their back yard... and pachuco zoot suiters!
They were a little before my time and pachuco was considered a bad name... I can remember when the west side of Compton was strawberry fields and hot houses out by the Compton airport and the railroad had an ice plant by the side of the tracks on Alameda at Compton Blvd., to fill the ice cars that picked up the strawberries from the fields. Also that there were dairy farms and horse stables in Paramount. There were three ice houses with in a five block radius of my house and that the neighborhood husbands and fathers would gather on the porch of an evening and "discuss" the news of the day. Try that now and see how long it takes for someone to drive by and spray ya with bullets. Yeah, in the summer, in the days before most private homes had air conditioning, we'd sleep with the windows and doors open, with just the screens in place and the screen doors "locked" with the little hook through the eye screwed into the door frame or the neighborhood kids would sleep on the front lawn, you were really big time if, when you slept on the front lawn, you had a surplus "Army tent", more commonly called two shelter halves put together. Then, all that changed, or at least it seemed so. In came the Black Panther party and other "race baiters", then suddenly, we discovered, that some of us were white and some of us were black and that we were supposed to hate each other as kids and adults because of that... Yeah, we've come along ways, haven't we?... Respectfully, SUNLINER81
