""Allowing the sale of pornography on military bases has harmed military men and women by: escalating the number of violent, sexual crimes; feeding a base addiction; eroding the family as the primary building block of society; and denigrating the moral standing of our troops both here and abroad," Broun says on his Web site."
Umm... wouldn't taking them away cause more of that (sexual tension and all)? Who cares if they want to look at/read nudies... it's not like they're hurting anything/anybody when they're doing it... |

I've said it before, and I'll keep sayin it.

Sure, take Playboy off the racks in the exchange, make them go into town to a porn shop and see even worse. What are you gonna do if they subscribe, go in and censor their mail with a black Magic Marker? Look, I don't support porn of any kind, but once the cat is out of the bag, you ain't gonna get it back in again. Prohibition didn't work with alcohol, what makes you think it will work with porn? The battle against pornography was lost, when the SCOTUS said let the community set the standards, talk about a cop out!...

Yep you keep the Government out of the whore houses, and no foot tapping in the Bathrooms. I think it might work. Is this another Islamic thing our Government is being told to do? When do we say KISS MY A$$?

UUmm , i had a stack of nudie mags in my locker 2 foot high, i don't remember ever entertaining the thought of sexually attacking a women after looking at any of the mags, and neither did any of the guys in the shop. Open a base in Subic again, that will relieve some sexual tension ! :-)
C-mon, if there are any morality issues here its in DC , not with our men & women in uniform buying , looking at , and reading Playboy & penthouse. I just wonder how many on the religious right are tugging on Brouns ear to do this ! Thay have been after these mags for a long time ! |

Let the troops jerk off...
I did...and cannot recall any instance of wanting to abuse a female soldier. In fact, a magazine is a cheaper date, always "puts out," and fantasies are the ONLY safe way to take care of business down range. |

When I was in, every shop had it's "smut locker" in a drawer in the shop. We had pin ups everywhere and some were, shall we say, "grafic"[sp?]...
The Chaplain would come around with some ship's MAA types and take down the pin ups, but never searched for the shop "smut locker" and yes, he knew that it was there... Respectfully, SUNLINER81 |

Even more intriguing is how many of the DC cats that are looking to ban these magazines have a stack of their own in their bathroom/bedroom/office... if you're going to ban it for the military, you have to ban it for everyone and vice versa and that won't work.

"Broun, a Marine veteran, told Newsweek recently that the magazines sold in military exchanges are partly responsible for a rise in sexual assaults in the military and other problems.
"Allowing the sale of pornography on military bases has harmed military men and women by: escalating the number of violent, sexual crimes; feeding a base addiction; eroding the family as the primary building block of society; and denigrating the moral standing of our troops both here and abroad," Broun says on his Web site." "A female soldier at Grafenwöhr -- Sgt. Pou McCall, 23, of Riverside, Calif. -- said men's magazines don't bother her a lot, but she'd support a ban. "What if it was their (soldiers') sisters (in the magazines)? It doesn't take a magazine for sexual harassment to happen but it increases it," she said." Where the hell do these people come up with this bullcrap?!?!? I flat-out cannot believe this idiocy was proposed by a former Marine. |

God save us all from fools like Broun! Somehow it's not obscene to invade and occupy a sovereign nation, sacrificing American blood, treasure and world prestige, but looking at Playboy is truly obscene to Broun and will turn us into rapists and send us all to Hell! If this idiot doesn't like these mags, he can stay away from them and leave our GIs (and ALL free Americans) alone!

This guy's a nut job...and a liar. I guess they think it's safe to twist the the truth because there are not too many old timers left, BUT... If there has been an escalation in violent sexual crimes in the last 10 years, it has occurred AFTER the military RESTRICTED the sale of pornography at the PX a little over ten years ago. It used to be that one could purchase harder-core pornography magazines like Cheri, Hustler, and the old-school Penthouse at the PX. About ten years ago the military put a stop to that. All you can buy are the softer, and some would argue more tasteful magazines like Playboy, Perfect 10, and American Curves. If this jack ball were really paying a attention he'd have noticed that a good number of paperback novels sold in the PX book section are lesbian oriented love stories. "Huh. Nobody's offended by them, I guess. How PC." If there has been an escalation in violent sexual crimes in the military it has far, FAR more connection to the advent and rise in popularity of the internet in the military, and the fact that we've been at war for 5 years. I'm sorry but, as a kid I grew up in a town next to Camp Pendleton during the Vietnam War. I remember that spousal abuse was rampant. Didn't call it that, but Marine and Navy wives were often heard getting beaten, and seen with bruises in my neighborhood. I also remember it becoming a rare thing after about 1973, to hear or see a Marine wife who had been abused in my neighborhood. Got nothing to do with magazines. This joker just wants to poke the rats in the cage with his religious stick for points with his religious constituency back home. |

Or a dead "DC Madam" who could have fingered them for patronizing prostitutes hanging in a shed down in Florida. |

Again, the issue arises and a vague, hypocritical, oversimple (read knee-jerk) response is being fostered. We are society and WE define these things, tolerates these things, restricts these things, FREEDOM OF CHOICE, correct? The justification as made by criminalizing the "offense" in question and tying in with said abhorant activity and behavior. Once again, a mistrusting attitude against the honorable many for the sins of the dishonorable few . Is it truly the root cause of what they say? I believe that THEY believe, from their self-serving POV, that they don't require any need for principle in their decision. Only a vague justification to unilaterally remove/restrict/deny something on their agenda, without just discourse.
Not niave to the fact that the Military is by necessity a Dictatorial and Regimented society that exists for and within our greater society, their mission demands this, BUT... Instead: Let the Men & Women and their Families in ALL Services have their say on the matter and THEN LET IT STAND... This message has been edited. Last edited by: GoldenSabers, |

What else could you expect from a bunch of non-American-way-of-life, Liberal Congressmen to decide what our Men & Women in uniform can and cant do. They are the ones who are sending them to the front lines to fight, but our Soldiers cant even look at the nudie mags without scruteny!! Let'em fight and let'em be! It is not against the law to enjoy a photo of God's greatest creation: the naked human!

It was actually proposed by a Republican... so the liberal argument doesn't work here... HOWEVER you could say that his extreme conservatism is a "knee-jerk" reaction to the ultra liberals that are in office (they are on all sides... personally I think it's bull and Congress is getting a little too comfortable with their job...)

Over heard in the Relgious Zealots Coffee and Grill downtown D.C...."I believe we should outlaw all Porno magazines and make everybody read the koran! What? Oops, I forgot I hate the Koran!
Ok ok ok..everybody in the Military must read the Bible ten times a day, except for the Song of Soloman...we can't have them reading such filth, or any other chapters where men and women are mentiond..such as Genesus...that naughty naughty Eve and all her nudity! Ok, Ban the Bible too! Our military people shall not be corupted by any filth! All they can read is what is printed on the side of their toothpaste tubes, those are clean and holsom and they shouldn't be getting too excited by that! |
