Some Palestinians only get 20 litres (~5 Gallons) of water a day, Amnesty says

quote:
Israel is denying Palestinians access to even the basic minimum of clean, safe water, Amnesty International says.

In a report, the human rights group says Israeli water restrictions discriminate against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

It says that in Gaza, Israel's blockade has brought the water and sewage system to "crisis point".

Israel says the report is flawed and the Palestinians get more water than was agreed under the 1990s peace deal.

'Basic need'

In the 112-page report, Amnesty says that on average Palestinian daily water consumption reaches 70 litres a day, compared with 300 litres for the Israelis.

It says that some Palestinians barely get 20 litres a day - the minimum recommended even in humanitarian emergencies.

Amnesty says that Israel denies West Bank Palestinians to dig wells, and has even destroyed cisterns and impounded water tankers.

At the same time, the report claims, Israeli settlers are enjoying swimming pools and green gardens.

In Gaza, Israel refuses access to many of the building materials needed to renovate the ailing water system, the document says.

It adds that Israel uses more than 80% of the water from the Mountain Aquifer - the main source of underground water in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.

"Water is a basic need and a right, but for many Palestinians obtaining even poor-quality, subsistence-level quantities of water has become a luxury that they can barely afford," Amnesty's Donatella Rovera said.

"Israel must end its discriminatory policies, immediately lift all the restrictions it imposes on Palestinians' access to water."

Ms Rovera also urged Israel to "take responsibility for addressing the problems it created by allowing Palestinians a fair share of the shared water resources".

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said the report was factually inaccurate, accusing the Palestinians of mismanaging water resources.

He also rejected the claim that Israel was preventing Palestinians from drilling for water.

The spokesman said Israel had approved 82 such projects but the Palestinians had only implemented 26 of them.

The solution is simple for the Palistinians, stop allowing terrorist to kill Israelis from Palistinian territory. Learn to live in peace.

Israel had been far too generous too the Palistinians. Israel should follow Jordan's example and drive the Palistinians completely out if they cannot control their own. But then again I don't think that the Palistinians want peace except after the total destruction of Israel.

That is unacceptable and if the Palistrinians do not cease from this path they are the one's that should pay the price.

PS: NSNN the photo of the child does not phase me in the least bit, or cause me to have sympathy for the Palistinians in the least bit. If they had any compassion for their own children they would stop Hamas and learn to live and florish in the Gaza and West Bank.

They are barbarians and those children should be taken away from them and truly cared for and educated elsewhere.

Oh my, those poor Palestinians! They are just treated horribly by those evil Israelis. It is Israel's fault that they launch rockets into Israel... It is Israel's fault that they squander all the aid they get from the world (including Israel). It is Israel's fault that Hamas refuses to acknowledge Israel's existence and refuse peace.

With the billions and billions in foreign aid they've received over the years....they should have a stellar infrastructure. The Palestinians are responsible for their own misery. As Golda Mier once said, as soon as the Palestinians start loving their children more than they hate the Israelis, then there will be peace.

Israel cuts of Palestine's source of water, we should cut off the flow of weaponry and military equipment to Israel - time and again, cutting off the flow of free weapons to them has been the ONLY thing that's phased Israel into making any type of concessions.

The side benefit of it would be that we wouldn't have to spend billions buying the latest high tech American weaponry for them and could put that money into rebuilding OUR OWN infrastructure.

Frisco,
Don’t take this personally, but your “solution” is downright ridiculous! Simply because Palestinians (including Palestinian Authority) have NO CONTROL over Hamas, or do they have ANY MEANS OF STANDING up to them! They are between a rock and a hard place (Israel & Hamas)! Israel is well aware of this and uses the same argument to sabotage any legitimate pace process. Why you think Israel deserves a pass for this type of behavior is beyond me, but judging by the second part of your post, ignorance (of the region) has a lot to do with it.

And rockets fired across the border don't sabotage the peace process....Once again...it's all the fault of those damn Joos...Seriously, when the Israelis pulled out of Gaza, there was a very modern infrastructure in place, and the Israelis said here you go, everything works, it's yours....and the Palestinians proceeded to destroy everything left for them. Once again, I'll say that the Palestinians are responsible for their own misery.

Long live Arafat!

Some years ago European and American money was ill spent on water treatment and basic infrastructure in the West Bank and Gaza. Went to the extent of building an airfield in Gaza, high hopes of cleaning up the sewage and replace it with a resort. Plans for a highway between Gaza and Ramallah.

Every leader including the Arabs were bending over to Arafat and then the second infatadah began because, Sharon took a walk on their holy ground.

You're not dealing with logical minds in the middle east. We'll never appreciate how simplified this is. Just give them everything from the Suez to Syria. They've already been handed Gaza by Egypt and the west bank by Jordan.

the more they give, the more Palestinian wants. No different from any culture in the world. Why work for anything while some idiots in the UN will give it to them.

I wonder if the Palestinians would have their own water system if Arafat & wife hadn't swindled all the aid money(roughly a billion) that was suppose to go to the Palestinians??? Confused

Poverty, famine and hardship is a excellent breeding ground for extremism. I do not understand why Israel is trying to increase the hardship for the ordinary palestine.

Is Israel so divide that they must have a eternal conflict to be united.

The same question could be asked of the Arab Syrian/Lebanon on the free flow of water of the Jordan River denied to future Israel since the 19th century. Going back to the Oldest of Testements water has always been valued .

Here is one of the comments made by Israel.

quote:
"The authors of the report chose to ignore Israeli data, papers and reports, although they contain verifiable facts presented with total transparency," the ministry said. "This questionable approach, which consists of systematically disregarding Israeli material while relying exclusively on Palestinian allegations, raises doubts as to the real intentions of the report's authors and of the organization itself."

Could it be that Amnesty International sees no fault of the Palestinians ever? No, surely that couldn't be the case.... Seems to me that they should have looked at everything. when doing this report.

I totally disagree with you, and no I am not ignorant of the region. My daughter lives in Tel Aviv. I keep as current as possible because of that fact.

Israel should give the Palistinian Authority the choice you either control Hamas or we will and you will not like how we do it.

It was the same choice the Germans were given by the Allies after the end of WWII and there were still guerilla actions against the allies. The Germans managed to stop it.

The PLA and the Palistinians do not want to stop or even stand up to Hamas, I think it is time they are told they either do it, or Israel will not matter how it effects the Palistinians.

They either stop Hamas or learn to tread water, for they have only the Mediterrian to go.

I have no compassion what so ever for those people and those that support them.

They endanger my loved ones and as well as a country I fully support. They must either completely surrender and live under Israeli law, or lose everything, possibly even their lives.

The Palistinians are the one's that are not giving Israel any choice.

Of course you know I am speaking of those Palistinians that have not already made the choice to live peacefully within Israel, and there are some. Not many as my daughter says but some.

God promised the land of Israel to the descendants of Abraham.

Abraham had two sons, Isaac and Ishmael.

Isaac is the "father" of the Jews

Ishmael is the "father" of the Arabs.

All the religious IDIOTS on both sides think the land is "theirs".

Why not just take the biggest, baddest Jew and the biggest, baddest Arab and have them fight it out in a steel cage match.

We could put it on pay-per-view, it would be the highest rated fight EVER and make a ton of money.

Whoever wins, gets Israel.

Whoever loses gets the money from the fight and can go buy up enough real estate in California to start their own country.

Problem solved.

Hey Dublin I would go along with that! Even the Palistinians could do a better job than the damned democrat State Legislature and Rhino republican Governor we have right now!

What happened to my beloved California while we were gone! California is a disgrace and it is Sacramento's fault!
