quote:
After news broke out of the shooting at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas, the nation watched in horror as the toll of dead and injured climbed. The White House was notified immediately and by late afternoon, word went out that the president would speak about the incident prior to a previously scheduled appearance. At about 5 p.m., cable stations went to the president. The situation cled for not only his trademark eloquence, but also grace and perspective.

But instead of a somber chief executive offering reassuring words and expressions of sympathy and compassion, viewers saw a wildly disconnected and, inappropriately light president making introductory remarks. At the event, a Tribal Nations Conference hosted by the Department of Interior's Bureau of Indian affairs, the president thanked various staffers and offered a "shout-out" to "Dr. Joe Medicine Crow -- that Congressional Medal of Honor winner." Three minutes in, the president spoke about the shooting, in measured and appropriate terms. Who is advising him?
Advising him, he needs a freakin advisor on how to talk about this? WTF!

As far as the CMH, Mr Medicine, he didnt win it and you dont win that award. But specifically that is not what Joe Medicine 'won' he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

In over his head.
Perhaps the problem lies with who is organizing the material to be read off the teleprompter by our Reader In Chief. He is a great story teller when the prompter is working. We have all seen how he locks up and sounds like a fool when the prompter is not working.

I heard this live on the radio, and I couldn't believe my ears. The tone was jovial, and ABC news kept cutting in to say, "still waiting for the President's remarks on the FT Hood shooting..." and they did that five times until he finally said something about the shooting....unreal.

After concluding the part of the planned conference remarks, this is what he said:

Now, I have to say, though, that beyond that, I plan to make some broader remarks about the challenges that lay ahead for Native Americans, as well as collaboration with our administration, but as some of you might have heard, there has been a tragic shooting at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas. We don't yet know all the details at this moment; we will share them as we get them. What we do know is that a number of American soldiers have been killed, and even more have been wounded in a horrific outburst of violence.

My immediate thoughts and prayers are with the wounded and with the families of the fallen, and with those who live and serve at Fort Hood. These are men and women who have made the selfless and courageous decision to risk and at times give their lives to protect the rest of us on a daily basis. It's difficult enough when we lose these brave Americans in battles overseas. It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an Army base on American soil.

I've spoken to Secretary Gates and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, and I will continue to receive a constant stream of updates as new information comes in. We are working with the Pentagon, the FBI, and the Department of Homeland Security, all to ensure that Fort Hood is secure, and we will continue to support the community with the full resources of the federal government.

In the meantime, I would ask all Americans to keep the men and women of Fort Hood in your thoughts and prayers. We will make sure that we get answers to every single question about this horrible incident. And I want all of you to know that as Commander-in-Chief, there's no greater honor but also no greater responsibility for me than to make sure that the extraordinary men and women in uniform are properly cared for and that their safety and security when they are at home is provided for.

So we are going to stay on this. But I hope in the meantime that all of you recognize the scope of this tragedy, and keep everybody in their thoughts and prayers.

Dave_M you should know better than to confuse those on hate autopilot with facts. They don't need no stinken facts, they know what they know and facts just get in the way. Big Grin

I was home watching the events unfold, and watched the president make his statements, live.

I thought he spoke with compassion and with understanding, considering that most of the facts were still buried in confusion.

The MSM have just uncovered this photo of the President's Head Speech Writer. If you watch the video again you can hear a slightly audible voice coming out of the President's ear piece.

It is saying "stay on target....stay on target".

And this is what I saw/heard in all the broadcasts I watched.

It's "interesting" to see how some want to put it in a different context, place all emphasis solely on the opening remarks and totally ignore this part.

You are disputing that he said this?:

quote:
THE PRESIDENT: Please, everybody have a seat. Let me first of all just thank Ken and the entire Department of the Interior staff for organizing just an extraordinary conference. I want to thank my Cabinet members and senior administration officials who participated today. I hear that Dr. Joe Medicine Crow was around, and so I want to give a shout-out to that Congressional Medal of Honor* winner. It's good to see you.

I do believe that that is what is under attack. His comments on the Ft Hood incident, that I also listened to, were quite appropriate IMHO (though some would argue misplaced).

Emotions are running hot & heavy. Maybe he should have lead off with these remarks. The whole situation sucks, though I don't think I'll beat up on the POTUS for when he said what he said.

It could have been so easy for him to set priorities...

"Before I speak of the tribal nations conference, I would like to address the situation at Fort Hood..."

But that's not what he did, is it?

Sometimes its is a tough and thankless job being President. Maybe too tough.

Hasan is a member of the US Army. He had been posting problomatic statments of the web, which were known to the US Army. He had an OER that noted some unsisclosed deficiency. He had expressed sympathy with suidide bombers.

Mr. Obama is the C in C of the armed sertvices. Mr. Obama should have had Hasan's jacket in his hands and READ IT before remarking.

Withnsses to the killings state Hasan was shouting "ALLAHU AKBAR!" as he murdered 13 people including a pregnant woman.

Mr. Obama had this information as well.

His remarks were too generalized , he could have been talking about a gas explosion. Again, Mr. Obama proves inadequate to the tsask at hand.

Horse$hit. He made his statement at 5:02 EST- 2 1/2 hours after the shooting. The base was still on lock down and the situation was still confusing. How would he have access to the eyewitness accounts soon soon?

All this background on the major came out later and besides, what was the POTUS going to say about it that was appropriate to the situation, even if he knew all this as you claim?

REad the title of the thread amd the OP and then state you can honestly repeat the claim it is all about "I hear that Dr. Joe Medicine Crow was around, and so I want to give a shout-out to that Congressional Medal of Honor* winner".

I watch this live and even though he did address the Ft Hood shootings, I was still a bit surprised it wasn't formost in his remarks. He could have handle it better, IMO, but what can one expect from somebody that has never worn the uniform or shared a foxhole or shared a can of Cs with. The feeling is just not the same.

Hey...back off everyone...gotta get those "shout outs" in and recognize everyone that's "in the house" before you get to the tragic events of the day, like 12 Soldiers murdered and 31 wounded at FT Hood. Ya'll just don't have your priorities straight.

Like this "shout AT" thread?

I notice there's not ONE comment about the victims, their families or the police officer who took out the shooter.

You people just couldn't wait to turn this into a political issue. Make sure when you send you condolences to the families that you make it clear that it's all Obama's fault- that'll make'em feel better.
