Well now ... I imagine one might ... but in my view, that doesn't change the fundamental fact that apparently an American soldier is in the hands of the scumbag Taliban ... or a similar group of "join Allah wannabees" ... and how he got there is secondary to getting him back.

We here can only hope and pray for his safe return and that our Military personnel can get it done, hopefully soon.

Don
I fully agree ... and the second guessing and negativism can wait until we have a definitive outcome.

No, HERE is an update:

CNN puts Mikey Jackson's will on top of story of soldier captured in Afghanistan.

Go to the home page if you don't believe me.

I realize that these links are based on release time, but c'mon.

As for the troop: who here did NOT get drunk while serving? Doesn't mean he deserves to be hemmed and hawed at in some terrorist training camp.

Get our man back - NOW. Or sacrifice him by nuking the entire country. I don't care. Just get him out of their hands. Those people are animals and will exact whatever retaliation on him they feel warranted by the almighty Allah to show us Infidels a thing or two.

Shame on the soldier for getting drunk. Shame on CNN for having Mikey above a captured soldier. And shame on the United States for not getting him released an hour ago.

Looks like you have become the same problem that you criticize CNN for: you got everyone talking about MJ instead of the soldier.

Touche', sir.

It's not that there is no God or that He isn't listening. You're probably just asking the wrong questions.

NY Times:

quote:
One military official described the soldier as a private first class who walked off the base voluntarily for reasons that are unclear. The soldier left his weapon behind, said the official, adding that it wasn’t clear whether he left wearing his military uniform.

I'd be sympathetic if he just went a little crazy.

Living in a small, remote outpost in the middle of bandit land would make anyone nuts.

Hope they get him back soon.

FMI????

Does the military have a buddy system or something like that?

You know, so if someone slips and gets drunk then you take his keys away from the tank kind of thing??

They could not drink in Iraq? But you can in Afganistan? So now a slip might happen from time to time?

We had a buddy system when I was in. And nobody ever followed it. Put two grunts together off-duty and we'll be able to think for ourselves. That doesn't mean we always make the right decision, but no soldier is another soldier's daddy or keeper. We are men doing a tough job, so we are expected to be tough men by our peers.

I am not condoning this troop's irresponsible decision. I am, however, absolutely defending him as a brother in arms that needs to be brought home now before those animals saw off his head for a night of a few-too-many.

I hate that term, "battle buddy." Even at 18, we were professional soldiers.

Thanks for answering my silly questions FMI, I know they must seem really silly to you all in the military, but I don't know so I have to ask.

I know he should not have been drinking, but I just have a hard time coming down on someone who is in the military.

I hope I did not offend by suggesting anyone is the military needs a buddy. I am just extra worried for them right now.

Also, I thought of something else for their well being, see what you think...

I saw on CNN that they are in an area where there might be stuff left over from when Russia is there and I noticed the men were spread out and walking slow and tapping their foot...

...why can't they just have a row of those little robot thigns, spread out in a line and roll out over the desert and our guys stay back to see if anything is set off?

Good one, right? Smile

Ugh, CNN is reporting right now that the missing service member might have been taken across the border to Pakistan!

I have always said that Pakistan can't be trusted.

Even Obama knows that.

Pakistan pretends to want to help us and takes our money in one hand and then turns a blind eye to hiding the people we are after.

They say Bin Laden is in Afganistan, bet he is in Pakistan or shoot bet he goes back and forth.

They are not silly questions at all. If you don't know, you need to ask.

I agree. IF he really got drunk as the media is reporting -- how would anyone know for sure -- then he made a bonehead move. We all make bonehead moves. It ain't worth dying over.

Not at all miss! No offense taken. The buddy system is a great idea - we just don't tend to follow it. They don't call us 'dumb grunts' for nothing, lol.

I am like you: all for whatever it takes to keep our men and women safe!

I have no clue what those troops were looking for, but the little robots you're talking about (UGV: Unmanned Ground Vehicle) are not in use in front-line units yet. There are a few EOD units that have them, but they are expensive and take training.

I do wonder what they were searching for. Walking slowly and tapping their feet? Sounds odd to me.

Anyway, USAGirl, please don't EVER feel bad for asking a question or refrain from asking it because you're worried we'll think it is silly. We all don't always see eye to eye, but we have one thing in common: an affiliation for all things military. As a supporter, you are welcome to ask anything your little heart desires, PERSEC and OPSEC aside, of course.

And, miss? Happy 4th of July!

There is not a man here who would not want him home at the risk of a few more Taliban shooting at us. A brother's life and welfare means more to us than a few more incoming rounds.

Just add another mag to your patrol load and shoot back twice as accurate, twice as long.

Then find his original captors and assist their meeting with Allah.

Yeah, just plant a nice little tracking device on them first. Then when they stop...fire for effect!

Well, since I don't know what PERSEC and OPSEC stands for, you are all safe there. Of course, now I am curious. Smile

So, my little robot is a good plan! See, girls are not so bad. Wouldn't you want me on your team? hehe

Too expensie though? Mad We spend how much on silly things here and can't give them the darn robot!?

Anyway, thanks for the wish for my happy 4TH FMI and a very red, white and blue day to you too.

usa_girl, OPSEC is operational security. That means we don't want to tell the enemy what our guys are doing or where they are.

PERSEC is personal security. That means we don't want to give out any info that would get our guys and gals in more danger than they already are.

Thanks Thud,

Sheesh, I think the media crosses that line all the time.

I am always thinking, why the heck are they telling the world that info!

I think we tell way too much. You get more security in a poker game. Smile

Nothing to report on the missing.

Our media reports our Marines have not had resistance. This in from Pakistan. Four days of fighting, no resistance?

Troops from Echo company of the 2/8 infantry battalion flew in by helicopter to Mian Poshteh, a key canal and road junction in Helmand province, as part of President Barack Obama's efforts to finally defeat the militants.

The 200 Marines fighting to hold the position arrived at dawn on Thursday, and they were still engaged in fierce combat through the weekend, Major Dan Gaskell told AFP at nearby Camp Delhi.
