Insurgents have captured an American soldier in eastern Afghanistan, the U.S. military said on Thursday.

Capt. Elizabeth Mathias said the soldier went missing on Tuesday.

"We are using all of our resources to find him and provide for his safe return," she said.

Mathias said details on the soldier, the location where he was captured or the circumstances surrounding his disappearance were not being released "to protect the soldier's well-being."

However, NBC News reported that the Taliban claimed to have captured three U.S. soldiers in the eastern province of Khost. The claim could not be verified.

Zabiullah Mujaheed, a spokesman for the Taliban, did not confirm that the soldier was with any of their militant forces. A myriad of insurgent groups operate in eastern Afghanistan.

The news broke as thousands of U.S. Marines launched a major anti-Taliban offensive in southern Afghanistan. The missing soldier was not part of that operation.

Thousands of U.S. Marines and hundreds of Afghan troops poured into Taliban-infested villages with armor and helicopters in the first major operation under President Barack Obama's strategy to stabilize the country.

The offensive started shortly after 1 a.m. local time in Helmand province, a Taliban stronghold and the world's largest opium poppy producing area. The goal is to clear insurgents from the hotly contested region before the nation's Aug. 20 presidential election.

This sucks. My prayers to the soldier, his family and his unit. Come home soon, troop.

It's not that there is no God or that He isn't listening. You're probably just asking the wrong questions.

I agree, God bless and protect this fine American soldier and may his family be comforted
and may he be returned to his loved ones in safety...

Several news agencies are reporting that the Taliban is considering offering a prisoner swap.

And I say to the US, do it without hesitation!

There is not a man here who would not want him home at the risk of a few more Taliban shooting at us. A brother's life and welfare means more to us than a few more incoming rounds.

Just add another mag to your patrol load and shoot back twice as accurate, twice as long.

Then find his original captors and assist their meeting with Allah.

I agree. Not negotiating for the sake of a "principle" is not going to inhibit them from trying to grab more soldiers in the future.

I pray for him, his family, his unit and his "battle buddies". I really hope that we can get him back!
This is a soldiers worst nightmare! I remember before we depolyed to Iraq (2004-2005, Mosul) I showed my soldiers the video clip of Nicholus Bergs beheading. I told my "joes" that this is the enemy that we are up against. Some here will probably question my sanity, however, this is the honest to God truth! I carried 291 rounds with me whenever I left the FOB. That's 10 magazines of 29 5.56 and one extra in my left front pocket of my trousers. I vowed to myself that if the situation were so bad, I would NOT be taken alive. I did NOT want my family, "battle buddies" or friends to see me having my head cut off on the internet and used as a propaganda piece.
Call me crazy, however, this was MY mindset!
Again, I really do pray for this fine American!
Sincerely,
A retired Grunt!

You're not crazy. (1990) My nephew Major before deploying did about the same. Some of his young men got sick and couple ended up not making the trip. Better to find out then than later.

Keep positive, put a word in with the good Lord.

This is a highly unusual happenstance, isn't it? How to Taliban get close enough to grab a soldier, even somebody lagging behind, without alerting his squadmates?

And once they've got him, how do they get away with him?

It's more likely this fellow is dead and not yet recovered, or else he 'went over' to the enemy.

Perhaps I didn't read closely enough, or there was more in the link, but where did you get this information from?

This is very bad news.

Shades of Viet Nam.......... for the few times I was ever in or near a fire base it was said that sometimes a grunt would "go to the ville" at night....... 'sometimes' they would return, if not what was found was not pretty.
Then again, and I know none of you want to think about it, but maybe the dude wants to become one of them........ I hope not and I hope he returns safely but I'm not putting much money on it.

The above is the address of the Washington Post news article. This guy was apparently alone outside the camp perimeter when the Taliban got him. He was not reported missing until morning formation.

I certainly hope that he is recovered unharmed. But, what the h.ll was he doing alone in hostile territory?

If only the Taliban would simply detain him in a place like Gitmo. Oh wait, that would be inhumane. Roll Eyes

In Vietnam, my father did the same thing, kept one for himself. Almost needed it once. I can't remember the amount of U.S. troops that survived being captured by the Viet Cong but I think it was less then ten throughout the whole war. The taliban are probably about like the VC, not much for taking prisoners. I certianly hope our troop/troops make it back alive, but even if he is killed, I want him back on U.S. soil, I'd hate to see him not be recovered, do what ever it takes to get him back.

I have no political point to make on this thread.

May his faith sustain him ... and his family ... and give them the strength to endure whatever happens.

The soldier, missing since Tuesday, did apparently leave his small outpost on his own with no apparent means of defending himself, and the U.S. military believes a video of him is forthcoming.

The Taliban earlier claimed responsibility for the abduction. The U.S. soldier was kidnapped along with three Afghan soldiers, Taliban commander Mulvi Sangeen said.

WTF over, the article also says he was drunk, I am not sure I believe that.

While that may end up being the case, it does not change the precarious nature of the soldier's situation ... or my comment. Personally, I'll give the benefit of the doubt to the soldier ... until such time as I am proven wrong ... rather than to the Taliban as some apparently are prone to do.
