At least two states won't give cash assistance unless proof is shown

updated 1 hour, 35 minutes ago
LANSING, Mich. - Living in a homeless shelter with her teenage son and three young grandchildren, Margo Kindred needed help, and Michigan was supposed to provide it. But she couldn't get welfare benefits without her Colorado birth certificate, and couldn't get the document without $10.

Ten dollars she didn't have.

"I couldn't squeeze it out, because there was nothing left to squeeze," the 38-year-old said

I'd rather be knitting.

This requirement does seem to be fair and decent, but is hamstrung by a lack of good sense. A fee waiver due to economic hardship could have solved this lady's problems.

maybe 2 less pack of cigaretts or 2 less six packs would have helped in the name of health insurance for the child benefits

For whom? The lady interviewed isn't reported to indulge in either. Are you suggesting charitable projects?

Are you suggesting that we youthanase all welfare recipients. Keep that attitude and you will be on the Fox propaganda channel and the rash dumbaugh show as a hero. The rnc will be offering you a job. After all Ted Bundy was a republican vice state chairmen.

Seriously,

This type of thing is something churches and other non-profits should be helping with. IMHO.

People are not as free with their money as they used to be. I am currently training wounded warriors in LA. My class room is in a hotel and in the last 30 days I have seen so many people down and out. One woman whose husband died in Apr told me her story yesterday morning.

They had lived in a trailer park where her husband had been the maintenance man for 17 years. He died on a Tuesday and by Friday the owner of the trailer park had ask her to move out. The owners of the trailer park are big in the church around this neck of the woods. Some churches are Christian in name only. Starting about 30 days ago I began to notice a dramatic increase of desperate people in this area.

The local social services are not equipped to handle this level of desperation. I think it is going to get allot worse before it starts to get better. People are asking for food and many are bagging for me to let them sleep in the floor of my room. This is a nice hotel and from OCT of last year to May of this year you never saw any of that. I have been able to feed some of them but it is starting to look like a third world country here in LA. Many of these people 30 or 45 days ago was living in a nice home with a nice car and now the have nothing. They do not posses the street skills to survive living on the street. Many of these people are Army throw away wives with no skills.

Well there you have it. How much could be accomplished if we used "common sense"?
