Glad to hear it...but something tells me the locals wouldn't hesitate to take up arms against those currently helping them if a certain portly mullah gave the word.

Inside the wall all is good. The water is bottled inside the wall. The sewage in the street smells sweeter inside the wall. You are safe inside the wall. Come inside the nice wall and have lunch. We like you! Very much. We'll take your picture and scan your eyeball, very nice.

"Walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage " ... some Yank say that?

Nope ... some limey, one Richard Lovelace [no relation to Linda], in the 17th century. Cool

Pop,

These people need time and space to learn different behavior, namely tolerance.

Walls do that.

Walls also ensure that the coalition controls access.

Do walls suck? Yes. But do they work? Yes again.

Nuf said.

Clearly they work. The East Germans loved their wall, and became the most fanatical Communists in the world!

Isn't that right?

No?

Oh, well, but it SOUNDS good! Big Grin

The wall did indeed work, at least until there was no one to guard it. And what did the East Germans say afterword? "That &%$&^% wall was a symbol of our oppression."

Cry me a river to all the Iraqi parents whose little kids aren't getting blown up because the insurgents don't have free access to their neighborhoods anymore.

One man's wall of oppression (Oh brother, Roll Eyes) is another man's wall of safety.

Iraqi troops enter Shiite stronghold of Sadr City

quote:
The large force in tanks and Humvees and on foot met no resistance from al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militia as it rolled into the sprawling district.

The Iraqi soldiers and police passed burned-out shops and buildings pockmarked with bullet holes, signs of years of clashes. But many stores were open, and some residents came out to greet them. Some Mahdi Army fighters passed out copies of the Quran to the soldiers as a sign of good will.

It was a stark contrast to a government offensive against Shiite militias in the southern city of Basra launched in late March. That assault sparked a wave of Mahdi Army violence across the south and in Sadr City. Fighting in the south was eased by a cease-fire deal in mid-April, brokered by Iran, which has ties to both al-Sadr and the government.

Tuesday's deployment was paved by a separate truce reached last week.

Under the deal, militiamen promise not to attack residential areas or the Green Zone, but they refuse to give up their light weapons. Iraqi forces promised to try to refrain from seeking American help to restore order. U.S. military officials said they would follow the Iraqis' lead, and no American forces were involved in Tuesday's deployment.

Like this kind of Tolerance? (Caution: Graphic)
One of 12 'Gunmen' Killed

It's a once in a lifetime lesson for some. For the others it says, "You're safer behind our wall." You think this kid's family are going to learn tolerance? Times 12 to-day.

Some who couldn't 'tolerate' Saddam Hussein around the other side of the world, should teach 'tolerance' well.

Those walls are doing a good job, eh? Here's one of the first looks at Sadr City, Baghdad since it was peacified.
Well, they sure have the space now....

Thanks for the link.

I was watching the news last night and it showed the people getting back into their lives and going to the market etc. They seem to have done some good there despite all of disbelievers on this site.

Woo Hoo Godwagz. Not often you lose it. Try to stand well back from the microwave,eh?

You mean like the Harlond Globetrotters. Or the brave boys who were 'putting the blocks' to that famous actress Jean Harlond?

Harlech... misspellings are common when dredging up 20 years ago stuff.. But I see you're timmy and raise you that they will take pride in the reconstruction.. as is ever the case where men strive against the entropic nature of the universe and humanity itself this will be an ongoing battle of reclamation and decay.. of course we should all be 'enlightened' enough by now to realize that it's never gonna end and just give up.. let all decay and the weeds take the field in rancorous triumph.. had Sysiphus been so enlightened he could've saved himself an eternity of boulder rolling... and the boulder would've been free to gather moss..

Applause Very Poetic.

I'm looking forward to seeing that urban renewal Maliki was promising last week. Some promising signs reported from 'behind the wall' and sewer work reported this week. If anything could turn Iraq around it would be getting 'reconstruction' right.

Hope the 'Battle for Mosul' doesn't distract him.

Men of Harlech?

We sing about them often over a beer or two down at the local... Harlech itself is just an hour-or-so's drive from here.....
Same 'Men of Harlech' you're talking about?
