God rest his soul

October 20, 2009

Leonard “Len” Keller, 62, died at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola following a crash outside the Fleet Reserve Association in Milton Sunday afternoon.

Keller received the Medal of Honor in 1968 in a White House ceremony with President Lyndon Johnson for “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty,” according to his medal citation.

The medal recognized an event in 1967 in Vietnam in which Keller, an Army sergeant, and a fellow soldier came under fire from multiple sources.

“Sgt. Keller quickly moved to a position where he could fire at a bunker from which automatic fire was received, killing one Viet Cong who attempted to escape,” according to the citation. He went on to kill several attacking enemies.

“Leaping to the top of a dike, he and a comrade charged the enemy bunkers, dangerously exposing themselves to the enemy fire,” according to the citation. “His acts were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the U.S. Army.”

It is very sad to hear this. I am familiar with the Milton FRA Branch. I never met Sgt. Keller, but may this American hero rest in peace.

It is sad to have another of our Heroes gone.
May he rest in Peace.

No one 'wins' the medal, so if possible could you change your heading to the more appropriate 'recipient'

You are right on the bullseye, I know a MOH recipient. He will tell you straight up, "It was not a contest" People calling them MOH "Winners" doesn't sit well with them. My Pops knows several and they all say the same thing.

Once agian,
Salute, R.I.P. Sir.
