Cheney Failed to Answer 72 FBI Questions

Documents from Interview in Valerie Plame Case Show Vice President was Unclear on Many Points, Big and Small.

(AP) Federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald famously declared in the Valerie Plame affair that "there is a cloud over the vice president." Last week's release of an FBI interview summary of Dick Cheney's answers in the criminal investigation underscores why Fitzgerald felt that way.

On 72 occasions, according to the 28-page FBI summary, Cheney equivocated to the FBI during his lengthy May 2004 interview, saying he could not be certain in his answers to questions about matters large and small in the Plame controversy.

The Cheney interview reflects a team of prosecutors and FBI agents trying to find out whether the leaks of Plame's CIA identity were orchestrated at the highest level of the White House and carried out by, among others, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Cheney's chief of staff.

Among the most basic questions for Cheney in the Plame probe: How did Libby find out that the wife of Bush administration war critic Joseph Wilson worked at the CIA?

Libby's own handwritten notes suggest Libby found out from Cheney. When Libby discovered Cheney's reference to Plame and the CIA in his notes - notes that Libby knew he would soon have to turn over to the FBI - the chief of staff went to the vice president, probably in late September or early October 2003.

Sharing the information with Cheney was in itself an unusual step at the outset of a criminal investigation in which potential White House witnesses were being ordered by their superiors not to talk to each other about the Plame matter.

"It turns out that I have a note that I had heard about" Plame's CIA identity "from you," Libby says he told the vice president.

And what did Cheney say in response? Fitzgerald asked Libby in front of a federal grand jury six months later.

"He didn't say much," Libby replied. "You know, he said something about 'From me?' something like that, and tilted his head, something he does commonly, and that was that."

Cheney's version of the conversation, as related in the FBI interview summary?

Cheney "cannot recall Scooter Libby telling him how he first heard of Valerie Wilson. It is possible Libby may have learned about Valerie Wilson's employment from the vice president ... but the vice president has no specific recollection of such a conversation."

Sounds like Cheney is taking a page from the Ablerto Gonzales play book "I don't recall".

Scooter Libby recalled too much and got some prison time for it. Not for what they were trying to get him for, but obstruction. Maybe Cheny is a little smarter than his COS. The more you say when involved in a witch hunt, the more likely the slimey "Special Prosecuters" will find something to validate their high cost of visability. How many times did Hillary Clinton say "I do not recall"? Get over it. The Bush Administration is gone. We now have Hope and change. Plenty of time to talk impeachment or obstruction for the future if anyone so desires.

Richard Armitage, he told Woodward in 2003, he told Novak in 2003.

Fitzgerald knew this from the start, funny how no one wants to send Armitage to prison, guess it doesnt reflect on Cheney, but on Powell since he was Powells XO over at State.

Armitage even asked Fitzgerald who knew he was the source if he could go public and admit it. Fitzgerald said sure back in 2006.

May 2004 FBI interview. This is really urgent! Roll Eyes
This appears so important that the deliberations to proceed will be faster than President Obama's deliberations on Afghanistan!

What is next? A review to determine what Bush and Cheny had to do with the Grassy Knoll? Maybe that would take the conservatives away from the Healthcare debacle and the upcoming Cap and Trade economy destroyer and the decisiveness of our glorious leader on Afgan strategy. Sometimes (normally) the Libs are really pathetic.

Cheney the draft dodger. Go quietly, as you have abandoned your country once. You did not stand beside her and guide her, but stood by and watched as her founding documents were violated, and the taxpayers robbed to bail out irresponsibility. He has have nerve to complain about the current administration, and he shouldn't, because it is they whom are continuing on with many of those same policies. Cheney's was hidden under "Conservatism", and the current administration "Change".

Joe Biden, has the exact same 5 deferments Cheney had, and recieved his first one before Cheney did in 1963 3 years before Cheneys first deferment in 1966. And oh yeah, we werent even engaged in direct combat(unless you were an advisor or SF ) in South Vietnam in 63 so Biden has even less excuse than Cheney did in 66. In fact had Biden had the testes to serve he would have been done and finished with the Military before the first Major Ground combat units arrived in Vietnam.
