Maine falls backward in gay marriage fight
Democratic voter turnout decline.

updated 6:07 p.m. CT, Wed., Nov . 4, 2009
SAN FRANCISCO - Stunned and angry, national gay rights leaders Wednesday blamed scare-mongering ads — and President Barack Obama's lack of engagement — for a bitter election setback in Maine that could alter the dynamics for both sides in the gay-marriage debate.

Conservatives, in contrast, celebrated Maine voters' rejection of a law that would have allowed gay couples to wed, depicting it as a warning shot that should deter politicians in other states from pushing for same-sex marriage.

"Every time the citizens have voted on marriage, they have always sided with natural marriage," said Mathew Staver, founder of Liberty Counsel, a Florida-based Christian legal group. "Maine dramatically illustrates the will of the people, and politicians should wake up and listen.

Same-sexers will start howling in every state for more legislation that makes it almost impossible to speak against them without treading the edge of "hate crime" laws. That will give them the edge in debates in legislatures, because politicians will cater to them to avoid being labeled as prejudice or bias or a "hater." Roll Eyes! But as long as the masses are allowed to VOTE on the issue, the majority will still have a voice.

Watch the effort to eliminate petition-driven referendums and/or release the names of petition-signers so they can be brow-beaten and intimidated by being labeled as "haters" to drive them away from voting their principles - -

They can have all the politicians in their pockets. The vote in Maine proved that legislation isn't worth the paper it's written on. If the people can push for a referendum, laws are changed where some sympathetic politician has made something law.

Sad days in the camp of the homosexuals. If they don't stop and be happy with what they have now, they'll find themselves right back in the closest.

Why don't we put all human rights up to a popular vote? How about putting the ability to divorce up to a popular vote...to preserve the "sanctity of marriage."

Divorce is between 'two' individuals. Homosexuals is a group, a group by choice, against the rest of the population, being the majority. Doubt if that is an acceptable answer to you but wouldn't be a surprise either. Wink

So it has begun, sorta knew it would. The american people are starting to see that, their legislators can be held accountable and can reverse their law making.....about time.

I find it humorous that some of you that cry the loudest for the sanctity of marriage are often the ones that have the higher divorce rates.

That's life, there are usually more of anything in a 'majority' than in a 'minority'. Can't really compare now, can you? Wink

Been married 55 years to an extraordinarily wonderful woman,
my good fortune!

If two men or two women find this kind of happiness by being married to same gender mates then good for them!

And it isn't anybody elses business!

I, on the other hand, have been divorced since 96 and have loved every minute since. I found out the hard way, one does not need a piece of paper to officially make anything a happy world. And the old saying 'is' true, why buy the cow when the milk is free. Don't need to be married or a piece of paper either to procreate (between a MAN and WOMAN), at least not by today's standards.

nothing is stopping gay people or heterosexuals from having meaningful relationships and co-habitating.

I still think Gay folks should be allowed to have civil unions and equal protection under the law, health benefits, etc. However things like hate crime legislation? Most violent crime is cause by hate, anger or other emotions. To single out certain classes for special attention is ridiculous. If you beat up a straight person or a gay person the punishment should be the same, you shouldnt have to spend an extra 5 years in prison because the person you beat up happens to be gay.

So did I and I also followed another old saying, first time for sex, second time for money, third time for love and the fourth time for convenience. Since 96, sex has been abundant, bank account bigger than it's ever been, a good dog gives more love and devotion and I've been cooking, ironing and cleaning house since I was 12. What the hell am I missing today?? Nothing!!!!!
