Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office tells THE WEEKLY STANDARD that the speaker will not allow the final language of the health care to be posted online for 72 hours before bringing the bill to a vote on the House floor, despite her September 24 statement that she was "absolutely" committed to doing so.

House members are still negotiating important issues in the bill--whether it will provide taxpayer-funding for abortions, for example. Pelosi is pushing for a Saturday House vote, and a number of big changes will be introduced, likely less than 24 hours before the vote takes place (if in fact it does). The Rules Committee hasn't yet released its resolution, or rule, that must be passed before the bill can move from committee to the floor. The rule will set the terms of debate and determine what amendments are in order.

It seems likely that the rule will allow very few, if any, up-or-down votes on amendments on the House floor. Rather, the rule will include a series of amendments that will all be adopted at once if the rule passes.

On September 24, Speaker Nancy Pelosi told THE WEEKLY STANDARD that she was "absolutely" committed to putting the text of the final House bill online for 72 hours before the House votes:

TWS: Madam Speaker, do you support the measure to put the final House bill online for 72 hours before it's voted on at the very end?

PELOSI: Absolutely. Without question.

But tonight, when asked if Speaker Pelosi will leave the bill online for 72 hours after we see what's in the rule, Pelosi spokesman Brendan Daly replied in an email: "No; [the] pledge was to have manager’s amendment online for 72 hours, and we will do that."

Apparently Pelosi's agreement to leave the "final" bill online "at the very end" of the process wasn't such a straightforward pledge.

Why sould the American People be allowed to read or know the laws that are about to be foisted upon them? The Democratic PArty considers us all to be helpless children that must have care forced upon us by their all-knowing, all-wise leaders. They have the power, and we should just accept their actions and shut up!!

First remember this bill has to pass the Senate also..... and I do not think that is going to happen..

Second, I'm glad to hear about this latest broken promise.... the people WANT to know what is in this bill and this latest act of betrayal is only going to pizz off the masses all the more. Noper, I would not doubt that there is whisperings within the Dem party to throw this abomination and her sidekick Harry out on the street. Yepper, let them continue to BS us... most will be out of work soon.

Odd how nobody in the media is picking up on this. Simply amazing that there will be those who will support this decision to with hold the bill from the public by the ones who support this lying group of scum.

Watch, some body going to justify this by pointing out something that Bush did or some other repub did.

I say that if Nancy wants this national healthcare so badly then she and all her lib pals...(including Micky Moore, the rest of the Hippywood crowd and all the other lefties who seem to want this so badly)...donate 90% of their incomes/fortunes to the cause first, in order to prove they sincerely care about the needy and are not just giving lip service.

If they do this, then we can have a discussion about the rest of us matching their donations .05 on the dollar.

Well, I for one am shocked, shocked I say, that this woman of integrity would even consider breaking a promise. Could it be that there are extenuating circumstances whereby we the people do not need to know what the bill says. Perhaps portions of the bill are (shhhhhhh) classified. Yeah that's it.

She must be taking the President's lead:

quote:
To achieve health care reform, "I'm going to have all the negotiations around a big table. We'll have doctors and nurses and hospital administrators. Insurance companies, drug companies -- they'll get a seat at the table, they just won't be able to buy every chair. But what we will do is, we'll have the negotiations televised on C-SPAN, so that people can see who is making arguments on behalf of their constituents, and who are making arguments on behalf of the drug companies or the insurance companies. And so, that approach, I think is what is going to allow people to stay involved in this process."

~Barack Obama August 21st, 2008

Does that count as yet another broken promise?
Im quite sure it does as none of the above things have come to pass and the vote is when???

I guess this promise goes the same way as transparency in government, limit access by lobbyists and none in his administration, unemployment wont go past 8%, pull out of Iraq by 2010, close Gitmo by january, reduce the deficit, no tax increases for those under 250k...
Oh well...

The bill was posted online Oct 29th.

http://docs.house.gov/rules/health/111_ahcaa.pdf

The manager's amendment was posted Nov 3rd.

http://docs.house.gov/rules/he...1_hr3962_dingell.pdf

A vote is scheduled Nov 7th. That looks like 72 hours to me.

Do you right-wingers ever fact-check anything before you start complaining about it?

A manager's amendment can be debated on the House floor and amended before the Final Bill is voted on.

CAN be? Is it being debated on? So you're complaining about something you think COULD happen?

Do you understand that the Bill is NOT NOT NOT the manager's amendment? Probably not.

You probably also believe that the Senate mark up process was by partisan when the Republicans were locked out of Herr(y) Reid's office. Durrrrrrrrrrrrr

You should probably go look up what a Manager's Amendment is.
