Basic Training
Posted
I am intent on going through the ROTC program in college, but I have a few questions before I make such a committment.

1. Are the scholarships that pay for tuition only handed out to a limited number of people? Are these people evaluated and selected based on a physical test alone, or is there a written test as well that evaluates intelligence?

2. If scholarships are indeed only given to a limited number of people, and you don't receive one, can you still take the ROTC program in college anyway?

3. After graduating college and subsequently completing the ROTC program, are you immediately thrown into active duty?

4. What exactly does your time in active duty consist of, and what about inactive duty? Also, after your duty is completed altogether, are you able to renew your contract and continue to serve?

I may very well be asking for basic information here, but I want to make sure that I have all of the correct information before making such a big decision.

I already have everything ready to attend college/law school in Arkansas, but I feel as if I would rather go to college and participate in the ROTC program to become a USMC officer. I would hate to cancel my plans for college in Arkansas if the NROTC program isn't going to work out.

Note that I have been doing all of the proper physical training, and if I do participate in the ROTC, I will give it everything I have.

First take a look at https://www.nrotc.navy.mil

To answer your questions:
1. A physical test is part of the equation, but your grades, SAT scores, extracurriculars, and an interview are also huge.

2. Yes.

3. Yes.

4. You have a minimum of 4 years of active duty and 4 inactive reserve. Depending on your job (like pilot for example) your active duty commitment may be longer. You can stay on active duty past that initial point if you wish.
