I'm in Marine Corps ROTC, however, I'm getting out of ROTC (for various reasons) to go into the PLC program.
Usually when getting out of ROTC, you either 1) pay back all the money they spent on you (tuition, books, etc) or 2) go enlisted I talked to the OSO and he said he's heard of cases where people got out of ROTC and went into PLC without paying back the money, essentially because you're still going to serve. (Since you're still going to go into the Marine Corps and serve, the money you would have to pay back goes away) Has anyone heard of this? If so, please share the story in detail. Does anyone know more about this? Can anyone show me documentation or anything with more information about it? Semper Fi |

If by Marine Corps ROTC you mean NROTC Marine option
But anyway, what year are you in? If you just finished freshman year you can quit without any obligation and don't have to pay back the money, so it's not an issue. If you've already signed the contract at the beginning of your sophomore year, then you've got an issue. Talk to your MOI because he will know what you could possibly do. |

There are no USMC ROTC units? There were a couple around when I was in Army ROTC (1986-1990).
With the Army ROTC scholarships, you had three choices after starting your second year of school: 1. Succeed. 2. Pay back the scholarship. 3. Serve in the Army for 3 years in the enlisted ranks. This is a little different. Never saw a cadet quit and go to another commissioning source. But it seems possible the Navy (or Marines) will give service credit in such a situation. But like wannagousna said, check with someone in the system so you dont get stuck somewhere you dont want to be! |

There has never been a Marine ROTC. It's always with NROTC. Some units just tend to have a lot of Marine options. I have seen Marine options from my unit who could not get the scholarship quit ROTC to do PLC in order to avoid the ROTC BS during the year since in ROTC you have to go to OCS anyway. I don't know of anyone who has dropped a scholarship, however, to do that, but I wouldn't be surprised if it has happened.

I went and looked at a couple schools I recalled having such a program (VMI, Texas A&M, Norwich). Darned if they dont all just have NROTC!! Perhaps in my time they had programs big enough to allow the Marine Options to operate like they were an independent program... |

Take it from a VMI grad who commissioned through NROTC - Navy option: there is and never has been an MROTC, it has only ever been NROTC - Marine option. Even though we tended to put out significantly larger numbers of Marines, it was still NROTC (though the NROTC unit CO there has traditionally been a Marine Colonel with a Navy Commander as an XO). |

at vmi, it still is nrotc. but the nrotc unit graduates about 3 times as many marines as navy officers. maybe that's what you were thinking of? |

No, it was more like seeing recruiting literature with ROTC students in Marine class As. And no, it was not JROTC. But like I said, it was probably something along the line of having so many Marine Option Middies, they just dressed them up in USMC uniforms and focused on Marine things. |

Hmmmm. Honestly I can't remember if the Marine options got Marine dress uniforms, largely because VMI does most of its events, even most ROTC unit events, in a suitable Corps of Cadets uniform. Commissioning was the first time I ever wore Chokers, or Navy whites of any kind for that matter. I might have seen wash khakis worn half a dozen times for inspections only and the the Marine options wore diggies for that, so I guess it's not outside the realm of possibility that they got dress uniforms as well, but just almost never wore them. Even for dinning ins/outs and the Marine Corps/Navy birthdays we would just wear our cadet uniforms. |

Odds are the unit was heavy on the MECEPS. They keep their uniforms. Did you check to see if they had enlisted insignia?

Not really. It was a little over 20 years ago and I didnt pay that much attention as I already decided to join the Army! |
