M16A4, but then again why does it matter to you? You'll see the rifle for 14 weeks then turn it in and never see it again. As a standard how about you don't worry about what small arm you'll be issued and worry about being in shape and the ability to follow simple instructions, this seems to be the most common faults in new soldiers.

As a standard- how about you relax, I’m already in shape ready to pass PFT 100% so I figured I'll learn about some of the other components of basic like educating myself on the finer points of the M16. As far as following simple instruction I’ve been doing that my whole life, partner.

WOW! Pretty cocky attitude for a wannabe. Popping off to a Combat Infantry NCO already...sweet. I hope you get your ass smoked off. As far as following simple instruction your whole life, what, all 18 years, or so... I'd pay money to be there when you get to basic, just to watch your tough guy facade go running down your leg.

You need to make a SERIOUS attitude adjustment, "partner".

Oh m'gosh Stryker, you gots to relax boy, I say relaaaxxxx!! This kid says yoos is wound too tight. I mean hey, he's in shape 'n everything to 300 that silly 'ol PT test......LOL!!

Better learn to check your attitude son. Keeping your beak shut will get you a lot further on in the US Army than being a smartazz to a well respected combat vet.

Wanna learn the M16? Wiki it. There will be a bunch of info you will never use in BT or AIT.

damn kids these days

When you are actually issued a set of uniforms and they actually see some use come talk. When your boot actually touch Afghan/Iraqi sand you can come talk with me. Until you have put some time in you haven't earned the right to even breath in this Army.

My opinions are based on experience. Here's a little background on myself. Entered into service July 04, assigned to present unit Dec 04, Deployed in support of OIF Jul 06-Sep07, served as Weapons Squad M240 machine gunner, AG, AB and gun TL; Line squad rifleman, grenadier, TL, and presently serving as a Line Squad Leader. Been assigned in leadership position since Feb 06 till present. Whats your experience for the standards?

You want to know what relaxed gets you? A metal box going on a one way trip for another box 6 feet under if your lucky and don't send one of your buddies. Relaxed means complacency and that gets people killed. You think that life as a 11B Infantry will be any better or relaxed you have a hard road coming there guy.

I am a Non-Commissioned Officer, a leader and enforcer of the standards. You don't have one leg to stand on there "partner". From your previous comments I see one of two things coming your way if you keep it up, a Article 15 leading to a chapter or numerous hours in the front leaning rest.

End of message, Out.

Soldiers in IET - Basic Training - are generally issued M16A2 rifles. These are still good weapons - but going through many cycles of soldiers, and lots of magazines and blanks expended through them shows on these rifles.

Make sure you check your firing pin for excessive wear or pits. Check the bolt face for excessive pitting. Make sure that your rifle holds the site picture when you get to the range.

I've seen rifles in training that should have been recycled into paperclips a long time before. Make sure you find any deficiencies in your issued rifle, and then show them to your drill sgt or request to see the armorer at the range.

Make sure you give the rifle a thorough cleaning each time before you go to the range. It's easy to give it a clean that will pass inspection. Don't take the shortcut!

One of the things I saw a lot of in training was improper cleaning. Either cleaning gear was insufficient, or training was lacking. I watched a lot of soldiers running the patches through the bore in the wrong direction. Soldiers were using green scrub pads to clean their bolts. Drill Sgt's had soldiers putting bolt carriers through a parts washer with degreaser solvent!
