I am looking for a rifle, partly for plinking and partly to have a good rifle for defense. Ive olny ever shot a 30-06 before so know next to nothing. I am looking for reliability, accuracy, and don't want a huge price tag. A mini 14 and 30 was suggested. Also a DPMS Panther Lite. I'm not even sure what caliber rifles are any good. Whats better 223 or 7.62? Is there any other nice rifles out there? All i really know is im not looking for some cheap ak knock off. Id prefer something more militairy in style and not a hyped up deer rifle.

What's your budget?
Are you interested in around-the-house defense or longer range? |

If you're looking for an AR-based rifle, then I'd look at DPMS Inc. found here... They have AR-based rifles in everything from .223 REM all the way up to the .300 RSAUM and the .338 Federal and you can have them configured in just about any manner you choose... |

Thanks jgcoastie ill take a look. I didn't know they made anything other than the standard 223 basic AR model.
As to price i'd rather not spend over 2 grand, which I think should get me a very nice rifle. Im willing to spend the extra penny to get something very nice. if I wanted dirt cheap id shoot for an ak 47. I have two pistols and a shotgun for home defense so Im looking for a longer range weapon. I dunno about anything chambered in the 7.62... better knock down but accuracy and range drop off quite a bit from the 223 doesn't it?? |

2K would get you a pretty nice rifle... If you're going just for plinking then a .22LR would be the cheaper route, but since you're looking for that and defense, then I'd look at something a little bigger... I'm not a .223 fan... Never have been, never will be... With the pistols and shotgun, you've got the short-range taken care of... For medium to long range, I'd look at something along the lines of .243 win, .260 rem, or .308 win... Heck, even the 'new' 6.8mm rem SPC wouldn't be a bad choice (though I don't have any personal experience to verify that)... I've used and had great results from the .243, .260, and the .308... Thankfully I've never used them for defense, but they work great on deer and coyotes... Also, keep in mind that the .308 win is a very popular cartridge with military and law enforcement marksmen... DPMS makes a quality rifle for the price tag, they also provide people like me who like the AR platform, but dislike the .223 with many caliber choices... All their rifles are customizable (to a certain extent) offering 3 and 4 rails for mounting optics and lights, trigger upgrades, etc... Just take a few minutes to look at their website and see if they've got what you're looking for... I'd be very surprised if they don't... |

WOW ive never seen so much variety! They have everything you could ask for! And well under 2k as well. Alot of customization there too. Well I will for sure be going with one of there rifles, now I just have to decide which caliber.
On a side note are any of the available upgrades worth getting? Such as the different recievers, and such, I know collapsing butt stocks and new pistol grips are all to personal taste but my working knowledge of rifles is pretty much nothing at all. So for example cryo accurizing, new bolt carriers do these make any difference? Because if Im willing to spend about 2 grand, and the rifle itself is worth less than half that and theres a few things that could be added to markedly improve its performance then it would be worth getting those items. Thanks for the advice, the help is very much appreciated! |

Get a fairly basic rifle and use it for awhile. You’ll learn what accessories you need as you go along and won’t waste money on unnecessary stuff. Forget things like cryo accurizing. That’s only for the hard-core competitors and lots of them don’t agree that it does anything at all.
5.56 and 7.62 both work just fine at close range. 5.56 is MUCH more accurate at medium and long range. DPMS makes good rifles as does Bushmaster, Rock River Arms (their CAR A4 retails for about a grand and has a huge list of available extras) and several others. If you get an AR-15 clone, I strongly advise getting the flat-top rather than the carry-handle type. You’ll almost certainly want to mount a red dot or a compact scope. Here’s my current AR-15 setup: |

On the rock river arms page the complete rifle kit says all parts less stripped lower reciever. What does that mean?

That means you have to buy the frame - the part that holds the trigger group and the barrel screws into and has the gun's serial number - yourself.
Only licensed dealers can buy frames. That's not the way you want to go. Trust me. |

And just for fun, here's my tricked-out Norinco SKS.
The stock and mag are by Tapco. The 2X pistol scope is by NC Star and has an illuminated reticle for imaginary night ops! |

I just picked up an Olympic Arms AR-15 M4-type for under $700.00. It was recommended by one co-worker who owned one, and another who is quite the resident expert (retired Army-type who spent many years in the marksmanship program at Camp Perry). I am antsy now to get out to the range to try it.
The trigger pull is smoother and lighter than the standard M-16 I am used to shooting. Carpe Debier: Seize a Lager! |

Nothing wrong with an SKS or AK, if you want to plink then the 7.62x39 surplus ammo is plentiful and cheap compared commercial centrefire ammo, ballistics not far from the 30-30, as far as reliability, the AK series was designed to be reliable, to operate with a receiver full of mud and sand! and easy to strip and repair. As a bonus they are cheap (over there in the US anyway) over here in Oz we can only think about owning one. As far as home defence, you are set with the handgun and shotty, rifles are more for picking off the nasties as they're fleeing down the street!! high power tends to go thru walls if used in the house.
The talk of US soldiers dumping their standard issue (M4 is it?) for the AK - recently during an ANZAC Day cross to the middle east one of our own soldiers (Australian) being interviewed for the camera was holding in place of his AUG Steyr none other than an AK47, interesting. |

I'd be careful running cheap surplus ammo through any gun, even if it is one of the more reliable guns ever made... Not only will you have to wonder if the rounds are going to cycle, but you don't even know if they'll fire at all... I've seen way too many people make the mistake of running old cheap surplus ammo through their guns with disastrous results... Do yourself and your guns a favor... Buy decent ammo... And contrary to popular belief, the M16 and M4 rifles currently carried by U.S. Troops are widely coveted by Iraqi police and military forces... Their antique AK-47's are considered to be inferior to the modern M16/M4... Not the other way around... ET3 Sends... |
