Hey guys. I'm just kinda hunting around and looking at potential options for future careers and the BTM stuff caught my attention. I'm having a hard time finding information on law enforcement in the Coast Guard though. I've read the PACTACLET stuff but that's about all I can find. I'm interested in the Boarding Team Member stuff but Im sure there is a prerequisite to that and it's the prerequisite that I'm having a hard time finding out about. I thought I read something about having to be in the Coast Guard Reserve? I'm wondering what a typical duty day would be like, how often you are away from home, how often you deploy to Iraq... just basic stuff. I think I read somewhere also that you can be gone for up to 200 days out of the year. I don't know if that's typical or if that is an Iraq deployment. Any help would be appreciated because I'm not finding much or I'm looking in the wrong places.

It's also worth noting that I separated from the USAF as an E-4 and believe that I would come into the Coast Guard as an E-4 as well.

Law enforcement in the CG is a collateral duty, at this point. The other services have their MPs, SPs, and MAs, which primarily just do LE. The CG has a new rating coming on-line, the Maritime Enforcement Specialist (ME) that will do primarily LE and security for the CG.

BTM is a qualification that pretty much anyone in the CG can get. The BTM is part of a team, led by a Boarding Officer (BO). You'll find BTMs and BOs mostly at Small Boat Stations and Cutters.
I thought I read something about having to be in the Coast Guard Reserve?
No. You'll find BTMs and BOs in both the Active Duty and Reserve sides of the house.

All of that is dependent upon your job. Only a minut portion of the CG is in Iraq.

Again, it depends on your job, and what type of unit you are at. Cutters go to sea for lengthy periods of time. Small boats stations go underway for just a certain number of hours at a time. And Marine Safety type units, well...don't get me started! Wink

Not necessarily. It all depends on what your specialty in the AF was, and whether or not it translates into a CG job. A Rate Determination package would have to be done first. Things have changed since I enlisted. I was a SGT/E-5 Army MP and enlisted as a CGR Port Securityman 2nd Class (E5). But that's ancient history. It all depends on what your civilian job is, if you are looking into just the CGR.

Good luck, contact a Recruiter to get the straight scoop.

Maritime Enforcement Specialist

So basically to do the BTM thing I'd have to join up doing something else, and then after a period of time try to go to BTM school?

According to the CG website its just a 9 day course. That doesn't sound right to me. Maybe I'm just reading it wrong.

Any idea when the Maritime Enforcement Specialist rating will become available?

I wouldn't want to join up if I had to start back at E-1 again or something like that. None of my jobs relate to law enforcement really so if they go by previous LE experience then I'm screwed. Thanks for answers.

A BTM is a qualification not a job. This would be a colateral duty. so yes you are correct.

ME rating I believe is 2009-2010ish, Some one will correct me if I am wrong.

JerryG has good advice and experience listen to him.

ME rating lateral is going to start in early 2010. After that, they will see how many billets there are and how to fill them. It's going to take a little longer.

Question:

I would like to know how I can get a current copy of the Good Order and Discipline for the 7th District. I am retired and I tried doing it on the CG web page but no luck. Could someone post it for me please. I also need to find out how to get a copy of a CG members DD-214 who was kicked out and facing State of North Carolina felony charges to see the character of his discharge. He got booted about three weeks ago or so because of what he did. I do not want to mention his name, but, of course what he did is open public court record information anyhow.

To the best of my knowledge, Good Order and Discipline summaries are not posted on the open internet. Nor are they authorized for internet release.

Also, from what I understand, DD-214s contain sensitive personally identifiable information (PII). It is likely that there are FOIA issues associated with their release.

You should contact the FOIA office at CGHQ for a determination as to whether this information can be released to you.

LC45, I hope you would understand the reluctance of anyone on here posting information of any kind on a current or former Coast Guard member. Especially to someone who has all of one post here on military.com and has no info in their profile.

I do not mean to offend you but for any of us to provide that info, it seems to me that it would be a nice way to get ourselves into a bit of a jam.

Oh no we already know the former members name.

What happened was he shot and killed one of our police K-9 dogs (Not the Officer) while on leave here in North Carolina. I will not mention his name, so if YOU know it please remain silent. He was arrested and booked on felony cruelty to animals charges. Again his court case has not come to trial yet, but, it is like all court information public record anyhow. I will have our detectives contact CGHQ next week sometime about FOIA request so we may attach it to his case for the District Attorney's office. Thank you gentlemen for the information.

As for the Good Order and Disciple msg that comes out every quarter, yes it is authorized for internet release, the CG web page even gives instructions on what to do to get it but for some reason we are not able to pull it up. Not a big deal. If you have however read them, those msgs never give names anyway. Just basic info on what happened and the persons rank and punishment(s) if any.

Thank you so much, keep working hard at what you guys do.

Huh? I thought most states would go with a charge of murder of a law enforcement officer. North Carolina doesn't? I'm pretty sure Florida would as the dogs are considered "officers".

North Carolina does have that law on the books, but certain events have to happen for that charge to properly apply. It was felt during the investigation to go with the lesser charge...still a felony though.
