Didnt see this till now - All above is true - While stationed at Group/Airsta North Bend Oregon - 6 or 7 of our personnel including myself were Active Reserve Deputies for Coos County. There are still a few personnel down there still giving their time to the department.
As long as your CO/OINC is ok with it...legal has deemed it good. |

Good to see that the CG now allows this. This can give members more experience in LE matters not normally found on Ma & Pa boardings to assist in future careers as police officers/deputies.
I shouldn't have to mention this, but....... Remember, your first priority is the CG. Should you be "walking your beat" and the station calls needing you for whatever reason, the correct response would be, "I'll be right there." Not, "Um, I'm copping right now. I can't make it." Ensure that the police chief or sheriff knows this before hand. Good luck. |

Back in 1992 while stationed at SupCen Nola, I applied for a part time job with the New Orleans Criminal Sheriffs Office. Was hired in 3 days. Failed to notify my CO of that fact, and a few weeks later when I was seen walking onto the base in my SO uniform, was called to his office. Ordered to cease employment with the SO.

My last year in the Army while stationed at Ft. Benning I was a reserve officer. I followed the rules and sought my CoC approval and was denied. CO and 1SG both said it was "too dangerous". Wish this study had been around then. I ultimately decided to do it anyways since I was getting out wasn't going to let them dictate my future.

That's a good thing. Only wish it had been allowed back in the day when I was active duty. Good luck and be careful.
Also remember this, if you do work as a certified (reserve) police officer you WILL be allowed to carry concealed your issued duty weapon or the back up gun (BUG) that you qualify with through their department all around the state you are stationed in and the coast guard cannot tell you anything otherwise. |

What state is this in? If a Reserve Officer in WA State wants to carry off duty, they need a CPL. |

Scott,
Since WA is a "shall issue" you are right, it's no big deal. Some states have different degrees of reserve deputies and officers. IIRC, in California some reserves have full powers of arrest, etc..etc..and some don't. And every state is different. When I was a reserve officer in AL we had to be partnered with a sworn officer and could only act under their control/ guidance. LC45 may be right, but I am sure that that statement isn't 100% in all jurisdictions.

In NC a reserve officer has to meet all the training requirements of a full time officer. Also has the same authority, just doesnt get the full time health benefits and depending on the dept pay may be different or it could be volunteer. So in NC a reserve can carry off duty just as a full time officer. My credentials just state Police Officer nothing about reserve / aux.

It probably should have been better stated that nothing in CG policy would currently prevent you from doing it. However the command still has to approve the off duty employment therefore controls the status of your reserve / aux employment with an agency. If the command does not give you permission for off duty employment, then you cant carry anymore off duty. So pretty much the command can still tell you not to....
