Is Coast Guard a real LEO job?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a question that I have had for years. I know you Coast Guard guys will get a little mad. My question is the Coast Guard guys who do the security stuff are they true law enforcement officers?

I know you Coast Guard guys do all that boarding of vessels with guns and stuff and have some high speed training but I feel that this is in line with a special operations job. (This is a compliment)

So how is this law enforcement job? When you guys make arrests or do the coast guard guys even make arrests? Who then takes the suspect into federal detention center and process the suspect for a federal crime? When I here law enforcement I see street cops, MPs for the Army and Marines, Security police for the Air Force etc.

Can any coast guard kick me in my butt and give me some feed back on this.

No disrespect to you coast guard security when boarding the vessels because I think you all have a very dangerous job out there.

David S -

Your profile says you are an AD CG E-6.

How in the world did you make it to E-6 without the ability to answer your own question?

Why did you refer to "us" as "you coast guard guys" if you are in fact one of us?

You question whether the CG does "real" L/E, yet you were asking Jerseyguy about obtaining LEO liability insurance for "while on duty."

You've posted a number of things all over the Mil.com boards in which you talk as a Coastie, but you certainly don't seem to be one here.

What gives?

"You got some 'splainin' to do, Lucy!"
