i am looking into joining the coast guard around next summer/fall. i just learned about this police department. can anyone give me more info on how to get into this department. if i live in ny and own a house can i get stationed in sector ny?
The United States Coast Guard is not a police dept, as you seem to believe. The coast guard is a military service, that has law enforcement missions. While, if you joined, you COULD POSSIBLY be assigned to law enforcement duties, other than the Maritime Enforcement rating ( Job field) you could also be a boat driver, a personnel administrative specialist ( yeoman) or other job fields.
Please see a recruiter, or ask your question on the recruiters thread located else ware on this board.
All CG Police Department billets will be converted to (ME) billets once the rate roll out is complete. Getting these jobs is the same as getting any other. Once you get into the rate you ask for it on your dream sheet. There are no special factors that will determine your selection for these positions. So, in short, the standard assignment process will determine if you get a CG Police Department. Oh, and on a side note, the detailer who will determine your billet really has no care if you own a home in NY. You will be forced to leave the NY area after a tour or 2 anyway.
The fact that you own a home will have zero bearing on where you get stationed. You could end up in Alaska as easily as in NY.
I believe there have been posts on here before about how few stations have a PD. Your chances of getting one are pretty slim. I think you will also find that anyone stationed at one does little that is common with a civilian PD.

I beg to differ, while stationed at ISC Kodiak as an MP, I did exactly what a civilian police officer did and some other things. We just did not do what a large civilian PD would do in a day.
As for the OP, not every CG base/sector has a PD, in fact there are only a handful CGPDs. The odds of you getting stationed in NY is very slim. In my 20 years plus, I have stayed in one spot for 6 years and that is it. Good luck.
