I've recently read about a suggested? new? Maritime Enforcement Specialist rating that the Coast Guard has created. I'm just looking for any information about this rating.

Start here...

...the rating is still in its infancy, so be patient with the Recruiters, etc.

i also am looking into this field. my recruiter told me that it opens Oct. 1st for those that are interested and you wait list. then it depends on how many classes they have available. then it goes from there.
i leave for Cape May on Sept 29th. i know most forums have a place for newbies... does the coast guard? i don't want to post in a wrong spot. thanks.

I'm a MP in the USMC about to get done with a 5 year AD contract and I found this rate very interesting because I would have thought that my experience would spill over(even if just a little bit) to this field(been to a few schools and even in the video on you tube recruiting 'new applicants' you see Marines at their MO school). That would mean keeping some of my rank moving into the CG. But my local recruiter denied the possibility and said that being an MP in the USMC wouldn't relate to this rating.

The recruiter is correct. At best you could enlist with a guaranteed ME "A" school and make it back up to E-4 in no time. Dont let dropping a rank or two keep you from doing what you want.

Hah I wasn't but I'd still join because it seems extremely interesting. I was also disqualified by a 1 inch stencil tattoo sayin USMC Semper Fidelis wrapped around my Calf. Funny how I never thought that a smaller leg tattoo would hinder me from getting into another brach of service. Dang rules about looking professional.

You may want to check back with that recruiter, the tattoo policy has recently been updated, though I've never heard of an issue of having one on the leg since we're always wearing pants.

One of three possibilities:

A). Your recruiter was smoking something funny
B). You were smoking something funny and misheard him.
C). That ain't the whole story.

I've seen two recruiters one near Boise, ID who was willing to give me info, advice and at least talk to me even when he was unsure on my calf tattoo(this is during early summer 09).

And the second recruiter I went and saw was in San Diego and it was a chief that went up and greeted me at the door and basically wouldn't even talk to me because I still have a few months left on my contract so he couldn't 'work with me' and he also had said that my tattoo WAS in fact disqualifying. Can't be doing the drugs while I'm in the military so neither of us were smoking much of anything. This was though right before(like within days before) the new policy had come out.

Now with new policy my calf tattoo will not be effecting me at all. Just another tattoo I have right underneath my collarbone on my chest. It'd be close and only way I'd be able to tell was to put one of those Vneck shirts on the order talks about to see.

Could you post a picture of the tattoo that is giving you so much grief?

I'm not very familiar with recruiting is there a standard list of disqualifying factors when it comes to a potential recruit, or is it based on a judgment call by the recruiter.

I use to see shorts worn often at the D7 units. Has that changed?

I don't see how "Semper Fidelis" around the calf is a big deal but that's just my opinion.

a tattoo underneath your collarbone should not be a problem,

from ALCOAST 050/09

D. AUTHORIZATION FOR TATTOOS ON THE NECK SO LONG AS THEY ARE NOT VISIBLE ABOVE THE COLLAR OF THE LIGHT BLUE SHIRT.

If you can wear a collared shirt and not see that Tattoo then it is not a problem

GOOGLE "uscg tatoo policy" and go to the MCPOCG post at

good luck

I think I'm going to go back into the USCG office and have them take another look at them now that the new policy is out. I'm sure part of it is judgment call but its ultimately up to whoever is in charge of that particular RSS station.

is the leg tattoo I have been referring.

good to know, I thought I was respectful when I went in the first time...never had a problem w/ insubordination in the past or anything on record as me being disrespectful. Thanks for the tip about the long wait, I've heard rumors but not from any actual recruiters. Thanks for the reply.
