Does any one have a good Boarding Officer Study guide, other than thumbing through a BOJAK? Taking my BO board this week and just looking for some other study guides.

Not sure how it is done now, but my LEDET BO board covered a lot if not all of the BO PQS as well as some LEDET specifc stuff (PD27, ROA/ROV, SNO, etc.). We had to memorize USCG A&J, the 4th amendment, and the elements of several SMTJ crimes.

Probably a good idea to read pertinent sections of the MLEM, any MLEA materials (if you went), as well as the BOJAK you mentioned. Good luck on your board.

Our BO Boards there is a laundry list of items that we hit on. The best advise is to "Know your Stuff!" MLEM and BOJAK, A&J, 14USC89/2 are some major areas for us.

Read through the USCG OPLAW Fast Action Reference Materals (FARM). It's broken down by topic area and has relevant excerpts from the MLEM, US Code, CFRs, SNO/MOTR requirements, etc, etc.

Info for future BO's-- rather than relying on unit-generated study guides, go over the latest version of the MLEM (with particular attention paid to whether it's correctly updated with new messages, etc). That's the best way to get familiar with where everything's located in the MLEM and to make sure that you've got the most up-to-date material (in case your LEO/LEPO isn't on top of updating the unit-generated BO study guide).

With that in mind, be very wary of any BO study guide that doesn't say explicitly when it was updated. Information in the MLEM changes a lot, and the changes are quite substantive.

Someone mentioned the FARM (Fast Action Reference Materials). This isn't an official manual, but it is a good compilation of applicable treaties and policies. It's always best, however, to start with the MLEM and go to secondary sources if you're still confused.

Protect yourself by learning directly from the source of the Coast Guard's LE policy.

Just an update on my board! Haven't taken it! The chit has been in for weeks, but the command hasn't gotten around to it (you know how that happens)with us being on a patrol then holidays. I have been studying the MLEM, notes from BO school, and my BOJAK. Guys have been testing me atthe unit as well to keep me fresh! Thanks all.

Thanks to everyone who gave their advice. I took my BO board, FINALLY!! After waiting about 60 days after school, and passed. I missed a few things, but I got the qualification after finding the correct answers. They went down the the entire BTM/BO sign off tasks and asked questions then came up with more questions, and had me do SBTs on a BM2 for the board. Took about 2 hours. I got it and passed!! Thanks again.

Congrats! I actually had come back here a few times to check on how you did.

Just remember, with power (for lack of a better term) comes responsibility. Treat those you board in the way you would want to be treated if pulled over on the highway.
