Has anybody ever thought about a law enforcement career with the U.S. Border Patrol? I'm a former Coastie that is now a Border Patrol Agent. There's never been a better time to join the Border Patrol since we are on a hiring frenzy! The pay is pretty good; you can expect to make about $45,000 your first year. By your 3rd year as an agent you could be earning more than $70,000. Most of you who are Boarding Officers will qualifiy to start as a GL-7 as opposed to a GL-5. The assignments vary greatly, as do the duty locations. Most of the former Coasties that I know on the job are excellent agents. Just a thought for some of you law dogs. If you have any specific questions I'll try to answer them the best I can or I can help you get in touch with one of our national recruiters.

Sorry there 21yrsUSCG Beer didn't mean to step on your toes, lol. Were you legacy Customs before the "merger" or were you absorbed from the Border Patrol's marine operations? I'm from El Centro Sector so we don't have any boats, but we do have plenty of illegal alien traffic, drug traffic, and vehicle pursuits.

I left the Coast Guard in '88 from Station Islamorada. In '89 I was hired as a MEO just down the canal from the CG station with RAIC Key Largo. Without a doubt, it was my 3 yrs at Station Islamorada as a Cox'n/boarding officer that got me the Customs position....that and I often rode with the Customs guys on their boats while in the CG.

Boy that's a mature response. It certainly shows your level of understanding of the Ramos/Compean situation and that of the Border Patrol in general.

There aren't many jobs out there where you are paid as well as the USBP to chase people and catch huge quantities of narcotics on a daily basis.

But to each his own. Some of us prefer catching dope and deporting bad guys over having to wipe the bilge and conduct the monthly PMS.

Washintel - I really wanted to light up eastcoastmk for such an ignorant uninformed comment, but I bit my tongue. Now if he or she would have left that message on the BP discussion boards I would have got some popcorn and soda and watched the show...

It can be tough trying to educate the ignorant. Sometimes they are so ignorant they just can't be taught.

Funny story, Shotgun 30. In 2000 I decided to re-enter the military (former Marine).
But first, just for S&G, I applied to the BP and tested in Belleville, IL. Passed the knowledge test with flying colors.
Then came the language test. Since I had no knowledge of Spanish I was forced to take the 'fake language' test. What a debacle. I was basicly told 'Great resume, good smarts, but since you can't speak spanish or a 'fake language' we don't need ya.'
So off to the CG I went and here I be.
