Folks,

I would think the US Army would have more common sense and time than to get into disputes like this one.

I always thought the best color of a APC was to let the dust take care of it.
It blends in that way.

H-h-h-h-m-m-m-m, why is the Army even micro-managing the paint decision?

Something is strange about this story. When I was in they setup 4 different paint schemes we could utilize and it was a choice made by the Chain of Command.

No doubt. If the Astan dust is anything like Graf dust. It doesn't matter if it's bright pink. No tank washes in Astan the last I heard.

It never ends.

Back in the early 80s, V Corps got a new Commander. His first directive was regarding Bumper Numbers. They all needed to be uniform. Didn't matter that a Duece had a larger bumper than a Jeep. All had to be identical.

So, all bumper markings were removed and chalked on. It took six months for a decision to be made about exactly how to replace the markings.

The painted on numbers were to be replaced by Black vinyl stick on numbers. Of course, there were'nt enough to go around. Some units still had to wait months to get them.

I always wondered if someone had stock in the company that made them.

Gumby, I hated that kind of BS.
Those were the kind if things that made the Army suck.
When I was with the 15 Cav, we muddied all the numbers before going out the gate, even going to main post. The CO didn't want anything being traced back to us.
In the 54th Infantry, they were anal about cleanliness and uniformity.

Try baby-oiling down a HMMWV so it "looks brand new". Looked great until the CSM saw it, had to scrub it off.
After that the thing was completely faded and looked worse than any the other vehicle in the battalion - in fact I'd bet any other vehicle in Korea.

They used to put diesel fuel on vehicles to make them shiny & pretty. Defeated the anti chemical properties of the CARC paint, about $25-$30 a gallon!

If you can't clean it , paint it. Big Grin.

I think we painted our 113's on 3 seperate occasions in '89.

We chalked the vehicles and put numbers for the different colors.

Of course it was alway the wrong green , or wrong brown, not enough tan,,etc....

Hey mech what are we doing today???

The Army isn't involved in any dispute.

An independant civilian journalist (Michael Yon) blogged about an article by a civilian journalist in Stars and Stripes.

No big deal- its stupid.

And its easy to get vehicles painted.

My first Germany had some stupid rules about camo paint also. We'ld get trucks from depot rebuild, pretty, nice solid green paint job. They'ld be deadlined until they were camo'd up. We'ld be out there with buckets of paint, brushes, and rollers. Fun in the sun! Cool

Mike Yon is the man, spent more time breaking bush than many Joes. IIRC he just came off a interesting tour as an Embed with the Brits in Helmand. His questions about Helo support for Brit Squaddies reached the Parliment level.
