Okinawa Marine busted for biting off part of soldier’s ear
By David Allen, Stars and Stripes Pacific edition, Friday, July 04, 2008 CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — A Marine sergeant was busted to lance corporal Tuesday for biting off part of a soldier’s ear during a brawl in an Okinawa City alley last September. A general court-martial panel found Sgt. Robert Graves, 26, ***igned to Marine Air Control Squadron 4, guilty of maiming. The felony carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and a dishonorable discharge, but the panel weighed professional and character references and reduced his rank two grades and fined him $200 a month for three months. During the two-day court-martial, the jury heard conflicting accounts of what occurred in a dark alleyway in the Gate Two Street entertainment district the night of Sept. 1. Testimony from Graves and other defense witnesses contend a fight broke out between two lance corporals in a bar called Good Times. Graves said he broke up the fight and separated the two junior Marines, and with his wife joined one of the lance corporals and another Marine who had wandered into a nearby alley. Meanwhile, Army Staff Sgt. Zachary Delisi, then ***igned to the 58th Signal Battalion, his wife and another couple were walking to a club when they heard a commotion in the alley and suspected a woman needed help, according to testimony. Delisi said Graves and another Marine confronted him and a friend, Marine Sgt. David Garitano, and were told to mind their own business. They said several other men were also in the alley and a scuffle broke out. "We fell to the ground, and he got me from behind and tried to scratch out my eye," Delisi said of Graves. "Then he got me in a headlock, and that’s when I felt I had been bit." Graves testified there was no woman in distress, and that they were attacked from behind by Delisi, Garitano and Delisi’s wife. "People just kept kicking my face and my nose and my eye and just kicking and kicking," he told the jury. He said his wife ran into the alley then and threw herself over him to protect him. "I did not bite off anyone’s ear," he said. Part of Delisi’s left ear was recovered at the scene and it was reattached. He is now a drill sergeant at Fort Jackson, S.C. Graves was the only person charged with a court-martial offense in the incident. |

I hope the Marines commander promotes him asap.
Frankly, from that story it is hard to say who was right or wrong. I want Marines and Soldiers to be warriors...and that means things like this will happen from time to time. They need to be controlled...so a slap on the wrist sounds about right to me. |

Thats the thing. You can be hardcore, and rowdy, and an @ss kicker. However when you go to that extreme if I am your boss you start to make MY life harder. If you are in a courtmartial you are not capable of doing your combat duty and that I cannot abide.

You got that right. Always hated having to deal with amateurs that couldn't drink, couldn't get em any, so always ended up in a fight somewhere. My first reaction was that the jarhead foght like a wuss. Who taught him his skills, his wife!? |

I was stationed on okinawa a log log time ago, From the story i did not read were the fighters in uniform ? If so why would army sgt. thank that he could take on any marine, he must know that if was to fight one marine. He would be out numbered. Most of these post are from boots. that never knew Okinawa Befor or during Vietnam.
When I was there 1962 to 1964I went fro lcpl - cpl I walked shore patrol in many forgin prot. jumped in the middle of many drunken brawls. again after Vietnam I was at MCAF for assigned duty having made E-5 down south. when I was in uniform and a fight would break out I was in the middle to stop it. however if an many times I was in civies. I would let an NCO in uniform handle it and mind my own. much of the post talk of what the refere to as being wisper alley. This must be a new place or a new sign post some where i never heard of. There was an area where meny people travled to for satafaction I was under the impression that area was closed down by the Government Eather the american or ***anese.? But in the old days it was know by vietnam vets make it a game any one know the answer. ????? |
