I'm sorry, I posted this in relocations, but no one is answering so I thought I would try my luck here.

Our family has received orders to West Point next summer. Does anyone have any recommendations on places to live close to base? My husband doesnt like to drive far for work and will be working long hours, so the closer the better. Also, how are schools around there? We have an 8 year old that will be going into 3rd grade. Is CONNUS COLA authorized for the West Point area? We see that NYC is authorized CONNUS COLA, but werent sure about West Point. One more question: gyms. Does WP have a gym with a kids section? Here we have an area I can bring my toddler to while I work out. Curious if there is anything like that there or do I have to convince my husband into buying me a treadmill??? We are coming from the UK and are a blue family going green, so any info is appreciated.
Thank you so much for all your info.

If you Google "US Military Academy" or "West Point" or something similiar, you should find a link to the installation's website.

On that site, you'll find additional links to information about housing (on- and off-post), schools, activities and services available on post (such as a gym) and so on.

Your husband will be authorized BAH at the with-dependents rate and whatever COLA is authorized for the area. COLA is based on zip code, so it varies from place to place as you know. If you get quarters on-post, and if the housing is run by a contracted agency, you will receive BAH which will - surprise surprise! - match EXACTLY the cost of your quarters each month. Normally, all you have to pay out of pocket when living in quarters are phone and cable/satellite TV costs, and perhaps ISP now.

WP is a GREAT place - lucky you!

You can also go to mil.com home page and select "military bases" from the menu on the left. You should be able to get some info on housing, MWR(Moral, Welfare and Recreation), to find out about fitness facilities and child care. There should also be some contact information.
You are going to a place that has been a military post since the American Revolution. You are not far from NYC and Upstate New York has some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. I hope you will enjoy being there.

To the south and northwest are bedroom communities. Across the river is quite expensive (hippies living the corporate life. They like to brag about their long dirt road...that weaves around 1/2 million dollar houses).

Life ain't worth living, if ya ain't got a good cigar.

Aren't they within tube range of the Point?

"Sorry Sir, thought I'd loaded a signalling round in the gun!" Big Grin

A Big deal when I was there was someone kept stuffing rolls of sh t paper into the signal cannon and if the MP's didnt check, well.....

Upon firing flaming rolls like canister came out of the Muzzle, cue frenzied MP's running to and fro with fire extinguishers

When I worked there, I was a civilian so lived north of the academy in Vails Gate. That was a nice place- Cornwall also seemed nice. I would avoid Newburg and its schools. As someone told me once, it was named (1980s) as American's most uncaring city. Crossing Storm King in the winter was a pain.

Many of the people lived just south of the post. As a civilian I would cross the river if I could not find anything in Cornwall/Vails Gate. If military, I would probably try to live on post- driving in snow over hills is a pain...
