Hi all. Just wondering if anyone knew if Fliegerhorst Kaserne (Hanau AAF) is still up and running. I googled it, but didn't come up with anything too current. I was there '91-'93. I'm considering taking a vacation to Germany and sure would like to see the place again. Anyone else here ever stationed there?

It's still up but visit it while you can because all of Hanau is going away by the end of fiscal 2008.

I have been here for 4 months and have never heard of it. I came through the 64th replacement detachment in Hanau and didn't see it. Nothing on AFN about it. For nostalgia sake, I hope I am wrong, but it think it was a victim of the massive restructuring and base closures of the 1990's.

That's what I figured too, because people were leaving there left and right in '93. Maybe I'll get over there before they close the gates.

Pictures of Fliegerdirt? WOW! You are nostalgic. I guess it's an okay Kaserne. I worked out there on the butt end of the flight line for two years. It was okay but I'd take good old Ansbach over Hanau any day of the week.

I googled Hanau Military Community and came up with a list of Kasernes and tenant units. Fliegerhorst is still listed. I was there from Oct '78-Aug '81. 61st MP Company, NATO Site 5.

Ah, we had a pretty good time there. I was at the old motor pool near the chow hall behind the rec center. It seems that there were regular pilgrimages to Frankfort on the weekends though.

Our barracks was the first one on the right as you come through the front gate. B 8/158 Avn(AVIM). My boots are probably still hanging out in the tree in front! Razz

The first building on the right was part of an Artillery unit, when I was there.
We were at Pioneer Kaserne and moved to Fliegerhorst from there. Our barracks was at the first left you could make after coming through the gate. If you turned right, it took you to the Snack Bar, Theatre and book store.

I understand the old NATO Site 5 is now the MP Station.

The 173rd Asaault Helicopter Company was beside us and then a bunch of the 503rd Avaiation Bn on down the street. The rest of the 503rd was in Budingen. I had dinner at the O Club in Budingen the night before I left Germany. It got blown up a couple days later.

Yikes! Eek The only crazy things I remember happening there was 1. A chopper went down with a lot of "brass" onboard, 2. A neo-nazi group was supposedly coming down the road to protest or try to come on post or something...allegedly, the Polizei was clubbing them before they got around the bend. I happened to be on gate-guard at the time, but was off shift.

We stayed in Hanau at Pioneer, then Old Argonner...or was it New Argonner, forget which one was the housing area. Used to walk to Fleigherhorst every once in awhile. Hey, we were kids and didn't have much else to do when we ran out of marks for beer.

I was stationed in Giessen at Pendleton Barracks in the early 80's. I know that it was turned into apartments for the civilian people but how about the Giessen Depot and Rivers Barracks? Anybody knows if the whole military is gone from Giessen?

Hmmm I see under Hanau there isn't a listing for Hessen Homburg Kaserne, Does that mean the ARMY is retaining that rat pit?
I was there in 81 & 82.

Yes, by 2008 it was supposed to be turned over to the Germans.....I don't know about the AAFES Depot there, but the unit I was with, 527th MPs, have moved to Graf.........what a heck of a switch.......from the Posh life in the North to a training base.............yuck.
