Riding the metro in DC, I sometimes pass by other military members while walking around town in uniform. Are salutes exchanged off post/base? I've found this puzzling because, on various occasions, I've rendered salutes that weren't returned and/or had people pass by without rendering salute.

Of course you salute unless you're under cover or what has been recognized by designation as under cover.

Just because they let their military bearing and courtesy slip doesnt mean you ave to join them in the mud.

I just didn't want to be rendering salutes to a bunch of people when it wasn't proper. Until getting to DC, I had never dealt with bumping into people in uniform anywhere other than on post. Realized that I had no clue on the custom there. Especially since it's tri-service.

Regulations require you to properly render a salute to any person of higher rank, regardless of service- the same regs require that salute to be returned. Like side before just cause they are **** poor, don't put yourself in the same boat!

When I was a Second Lieutenant, I attended my father's funeral in Dress Greens. So did my Staff Sergeant cousin. He saluted me and rendered the other usual courtesies. We changed clothes later and became Chris and Bob.

Yes, you salute when coming across an officer whether they are in the Army, Marines, Coast Guard, National Gurad, etc. Same goes for officers from NATO countries, Japan and Republic of Korea.

AR 600-25, Chapter 1-5:

i. Salutes are not required to be rendered or returned when the senior or subordinate, or both are —

(1) In civilian attire.

(2) Engaged in routine work if the salute would interfere.

(3) Carrying articles with both hands so occupied as to make saluting impracticable.

(4) Working as a member of a detail, or engaged in sports or social functions where saluting would present a safety hazard.

(5) In public places such as theaters, churches, and in public conveyances.

(6) In the ranks of a formation.

Unless you're on a plane, bus, or other form of public transit, you give or receive the salute..

As long as you are both wearing covers and not indoors/on transportation, salute. If they don't respond, hold it and give them a big rousing. "GOOD MORNING/AFTERNOON SIR/MA'AM!"

Saluting is a sign of respect. Returning is also a sign of respect.

You already know the right answer, render the salute.
