Yeah, my BN was primarily tasked with guarding that particular FOB. My company was the only one that regularly went outside the wire. We had two platoons on patrols, raids, QRF, etc. and one on tower guard (which was no joke). The rest of the BN spent most of the tour inside the wire. It was kind of sad for us because we spent a hell of a lot of time cleaning up that AO.

MG Peay visited my battalion on Thanksgiving day 1990, while we out in the desert. His UH-60 landed by the chow area, he got out and cut straight to the front of the line. Didn't bother to mingle with the troops or anything I lost all respect for him at that moment. My feeling was reinforced the following summer back at Campbell during his change of command ceremony. The whole post marching around on the parade field in the pouring rain while he sat by the podium under cover, dry as a bone and basking in his glory.

As for Runfuret's comment about not being impressed by the 101st, I thought it was a bit overrated myself - always clinging to the past glory of WW2. Still a good unit, but not a great one as people like to claim. I'll probably be accused of treason or blasphemy for saying that, but since I actually served in the division I'm entitled to my opinion.

As a current 10th Mountain soldier, I can tell you that it's not that simple. A Division is a BIG organization, and thus you have Brigades, Battalions, and Companies. Each unit is unique and thus has its own character. You cannot characterize an entire Division based on a limited experience with one unit or soldier.

Each unit in the Division does things differently, from PT to combat operations.

I'm proud to wear the crossed bayonets of the 10th Mountain, but there are a lot of things in my particular unit that I believe could/should be done better... But every junior enlisted soldier says that. Cool
