Seriously, if there were ever a division in the Army I would of liked to have been a part of if I had gone active, it would have been the 10th MTN.

Im not trying to step on any toes here because I know every division has its studs. But honestly dude, two divisions I have never been impressed with are the 10th, and the 101st. |

I went to Drill Sergeant School with a SFC from 10th Mountain. That guy was one of the hardest muldoons I ever served with.
I've served with a few others who have spent time in 10th Mountain. Overall, they were average troops. No better or worse than those from any other division. Can't say I know as many from 101st. |

You know, it was probably just a symptom of cer***stance. Your right about the 10th. Average Soldiers, no better or worse than anyone else. the 101st however is a different story. Every single Soldier that was in my unit that came over from the 101st was subpar. They all ended up in the armory, the supply room, or just plain transfered out. While it's true that "Arctic Wolves" are tougher than the average Soldier I was still shocked to see the lack of ability on their part. Not to mention that part of my time in Iraq was spent under the command of task force B.O.B. Which if any of you have ever dealt with them I'm sure can can understand my gripes.

I'm sure the 101st is generally made up of good units. But my battalion RIPed with a BN from the 101st artillery and those guys sucked. Heard nothing but bad things from our former AO after we left.

My unit was attached to the 10th Mountain on our last deployment, and I personally thought they were professional and competent. I wasn't so impressed with the 82nd, a division that seemed more concerned with garrisonizing every FOB than with mission accomplishment. The 101st I haven't dealt with directly.
Ultimately though, there are NO bad units, only bad LEADERS. The odd s***bag aside, soldiers generally perform to the standard set by their leaders; bad leaders equals poor soldiers. |

I agree with that. Especially the young troopers. They want to be hardcore and do well but their leaders sometimes let them down.

10th Mountain's Commanding General is pretty cool. He came to talk to us one time since we're a sub-unit of them. He said when strangers come up to him in the airport and tell him that they're sorry he has to deploy and other anti-war crap he tells them to "back the F off before I punch you in the face."

Remember Major General Allen at Campbell? He is the one that stoped all company level sports, and all the stripers in the clubs on post!!!!!! |

Like he ever went to the NCO clubs. Thanks pal! We were attached to the 101 during Desert Shield. We were treated like red headed step kids, so, didn't care who was Division commander then. When I got to Campbell in 95, Gen Keane was the big dawg.

Peay was the division CG, and Hugh Shelton was the BG during Desert Shield and Storm. Allen was there in 88 thru early 90. He had us paint all traffic yellow paint on post white. Airdiablo would remember this. And just to let you know we were treated like red headed step children my entire time at Campbell becasue we belonged to the 18th Airborne Corps. 8 years as a step child! |

You can do company level sports at Campbell now, last I checked. but you have to wait until 0700 for some weird reason. The post CSM stopped us and told us that. Come to think of it, he used to stop us quite a bit. "Where is your reflective belt?" "Why are you in civilians?" "Why is your shirt untucked?"

I liked COL Nicholson (who commanded 3rd BCT 10th Mountain in '06; I don't know where he's assigned now). He struck me as a real lead from the front type, with no bs. About four months after we got home, our Guard unit had their official 'welcome home' hooah ceremony at the state armory in Hartford, and COL Nicholson went out of his way to come to the event (no joke, he had to fly from Fort Drum). I really respected that. CSM Redmore, the Brigade CSM, was also one those leaders. He wasn't the sort of leader who says 'go take that objective'; he was more the sort who'd say 'what the **** is the hold-up? I've already cleared three rooms on my own, get your ass in here!' He was also Level IV Combatives instructor certified, and whenever he'd shake your hand he'd always have you in a control position with the other arm.. |

At the end of our tour during OIF 4, 2nd Brigade 10th Mountain replaced my brigade, they seemed no different from any other infantry unit. I don't think you can really say any brigade or division is any better than another one within the Regular Army since we have Soldiers pcsing from all over the place these days. It really is what the leaders make of it.
Foxred, I know about the particular unit you're talking about. They were all the hell ate up. As far as I know, they spent the majority of the deployment doing gate guard, and I belive they are doing the exact same thing this time. That what happens when you try to turn Cannon ****ers into infantrymen. |
