you know how you get the nice little certificate with the oath on it after you re-up? I feel sorry for the guy who administered this oath and has to sign all those things!

That is pretty squared away tho. really sends a message to all the anti-war/anti-military code pink hippie *******s.

SERIOUSLY!!! This "profanity filter" is a little picky, IMHO. I'll give props to whomever can come up with the most profanity laden sentence, lol! I wonder how many little *'s can fit into one post!!! Roll Eyes

They are updating the profanity filter and made some typos in the process thats why you see subtext of words censored now. As you identify problem text let one of the Army Mods know about it and we will get Rob to fix it.

My take on the profanity filter as a Mod:

Profanity filter is a good thing in one specific case because it keeps the pervs out of the Forums.

When you do a Google Search on specific keywords some of the posts on Military.com are returned in the Search results. So without the profanity filter......you can imagine what type of posters would show up in this Forum (for the wrong reasons).

As it stands now the Spouses Forum (Military spouse talk) and Hot Topics (Gay threads) are the two main landing places (or draws) for the internet pervs because of the keywords they use within posts in both forums are at times racy. Thats where the pervs usually start posting on this website first because they see the threads via a Google keyword search. I see the posts from the pervs in the discarded post forum (which is visible only to Mods).

So Military.com tries to group the Gay Threads in one topical area instead of letting them start all over the website.....thats one of the reasons (not the only reason). They know what I described above happens because they have a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Group just like my employer does.

My employer tries to make sure that specific keywords are not accidently used for example on a religious website that they might design or web host for example.......for obvious reasons.

The whole topic on Search Engines and keywords is an interesting one......sorry on the hijack. Just my two cents on the whole profanity thing.

Pffft, you know how the Army is supposed to give you a case and a little miniature lapel pin? Never once did I get one of those for any of my awards. And yeah, I've had to give some of mine back after the ceremony too. I guess it doesnt really matter when it comes down to it. You can tell how much medals mean to me seeing as how I gave all mine away.

you know what run, I totally agree with you. I have seen people who never done chit during a deployment get a BSM with "v" device while guys who did some serious risk taking get nothing. Hell, my Brigade put a 33% rule out for awards when we deployed the first time. Only 33% of the Brigade were allowed to get an award for Iraq, even if you merited one for going above and beyond. Of course this is against regulations but it happened. So who ended up getting them? Of course all the Officers and Senior NCO with just a sprinkling of Soldiers.
There was even one E-4 that got it because he was the BN CMDRs translator. Guy was born in Egypt so he could speak Aribic. He was a POS Infantryman, got kicked out of every company in the BN. Only the he could do was breath and Translate. But he got a BSM. So after seeing all that, plus some other BS, Awards mean nothing to me. I make sure to put my guys in for one after every field problem, soldiers need to be recognized. As for me, just give me a late call or something...

That's cool.

The hardest medal to get in the National Guard has got to be the Good Conduct Medal. I want one so bad because I'm years overdo for one and a lot of guys don't have them. The Guard in many places just doesn't think of it.

True that. Medals mean a lot to joes and it helps moral to put them in for awards. Joe appretiates an award especially when he has less than a row. I have seen a lot of things that you mentioned. Almost every staff officer In my BN got a bronze star. Every NCO SFC and above got one too. My platoon sergeant even told the SGM "Dont put me in for no bronze star. I didnt do nothin." He got one anyway.

One success story with awards in my unit was one truely heroic private was awarded the DSC for actions in Mosul. His was well deserved. Other than that, I have seen some selfless and heroic acts go down without even thank you much less an award.

An active duty GCM? Or the reserve component version?

I'm pretty sure there's only one version. I just looked at a list of medals and there seems to be only the "Army GCM".

http://www.gruntsmilitary.com/arcam.shtml

3. Criteria: The Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal is awarded for exemplary behavior, efficiency, and fidelity while serving as a member of an Army National Guard or Army Reserve Troop Program Unit for each four year period since 3 March 1972. Effective 28 March 1995, the period of qualifying service for the award was reduced from four years to three years; however, this change was not retroactive. Service must have been consecutive and service performed in the Reserve Component of the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard may not be credited for award of this medal. The member must have exhibited honest and faithful service in accordance with the standards of conduct, courage and duty required by law and customs of the service of a member of the same grade as the individual to whom the standard is being applied. A member must be recommended for the award by his/her unit commander.
