My son is home on emergency leave (he's an E-2 stationed in Fort Hood, TX). His father was to have open heart surgery last Tuesday however, when they did a test he had fluid around his lung and heart and they had to have that drained..that was done on Thursday they are waiting to get another x-ray on Monday to see if they can do the heart catherization on Tuesday and then the actual heart surgery on Wednesday. My son has been home for 10 days leave for this and is to report back tomorrow night at midnight. What are the chances of him getting his Emergency Leave extended? I know it will have to go through the red cross as this is how he got to come home. I told him we'll have to call the Red Cross first thing tomorrow morning if that is the procedure we need to follow.

Also, will this be charged leave to him? I'm just not sure and he wasn't too sure either.

Thank you.

Google AR 600-8-10 (Army Regulation)

What you're looking for begins on page 44 .

d. Soldiers may be authorized emergency leave for up to 30 days for emergency situations within the immediate
family.

Page 48

6–5. Rules to request extension of emergency leave
a. Prior to departure on emergency leave, soldiers will be briefed on procedures to request an extension of leave
(para 10–7).
b. Soldier may request an extension of emergency leave through the AMCROSS. (AMCROSS facilitates communication
with command.) If there is less than 72 hours between the time the soldier reports to the Red Cross and
expiration of soldier’s leave, ARC will contact the appropriate PAP (chap 10). The PAP then provides an interim
extension of leave, if necessary (not to exceed 72 hours) and completes coordination with the overseas command.

So what your son needs to do is contact his unit per his Emergency Leave briefing. Emergency leave is granted by his unit's commander. There's always a Charge of Quarters (CQ) on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 356 days a year.

As an E2 he's got lots to learn, one of which is he is the one who's responsible for letting his chain of command of any situation that materially affects his ability to perform his duty or be at his place of duty on time. Him and him alone unless he's phyiscally unable.

He should contact his chain of command immediately...they may be able to help him.

Also...you can call the Red Cross ANYTIME. Have him call now. It is better to do it now than wait until tomorrow. It gives them more time to do something.

Thank you. He contacted his sgt who contacted the 1st sgt and he said that the 1st sgt said no he wasn't extending it...He did call Red Cross too so we'll see what happens. Can the 1st sgt deny it?

The 1st Sgt can only make recommedations to the Commander, but the Commander always has the final word.

Its a commanders' call per AR 600-8-10.

Thank you. He called into the Red Cross and they said that they will be in touch with the hospital to verify and send something over to the command. I sure hope he hears something before 1 pm est as that is when we have to leave to get him to the airport so that he can catch his flight back to Texas.

The Red Cross just called back they called the hospital but until the do the one test tomorrow there is no date for the heart surgery...so it looks as if he may just have to report...unless they know something tomorrow early.

The captain (Think that's what he's called) just called and extended his leave until Saturday at midnight. He asked him if he he had the days available and my son said yes...so he's home until them.. Hopefully his father will have surgery early in the week then my son said that he will go back earlier...

Thanks for all the help on here...

Good, I hope things turn out well.

I'm sure your son's company commander (A Captain O3 is the usual rank for such a unit size) is glad your son is following the correct process.

The Army is funny in that it doesnt matter whats being done as long as its done by the book.
