I am new to the army life. My husband and I were just married in July. Soon we will be off to Fort Bragg sometime in December. Just looking to meet some new friends! Anyone else from Bragg? How is it there?
Hi! I'm here at Bragg, it's super hot & muggy right now but besides that i like it. We came from Germany so we are happy to be back in the US. Let me know if you have any questions!!
There are some nice places to live off post as well if you aren't set of living on post. Not sure of rank so i don't know what your BAH will cover though. We live off post in Raeford. As far as jobs go, depending on what you are looking for, they are kind of non existent. The help wanted ads on sundays are like 3 pages. The post is big but it's easy to navigate!
sc919 - How long have yoy been at Bragg? What are some good areas to look into if we have to live off post? I know Fayetteville has some really sketchy areas. Which should we stay away from? I hope you are enjoying Bragg! My husband is an Army Brat and he lived in Germany when his dad was stationed there for 6 years. When they came back stateside they were posted at Bragg as well. So he knows the area a little bit..buts its been about 10 years since he was last there.
sweet_rain65 - We've been trying to look into housing off post (in case we can't get on post)but it is hard to do that when we aren't physically there. And those who I have talked to about some of the areas around Fort Bragg keep giving me different opinions..lol But anyways, we haven't gotten on the waitlist yet, because we have to wait 90 days before we are assigned there I guess. I'm new to all this so I am not sure how all of it works! lol
This time we have been here since June, but my husband and i met here 8 1/2 years ago. Things have changed since then so I know they changed a bit since your husband was here Do you want a house or apartment? That'll help me give you areas. Stay away from Spring Lake regardless. We are in Raeford (close to the border of fayetteville) and like it a lot. Only about 20 min to post from here (the chicken rd. gate, which is by the south post commissary & px). Hard thing with Fayetteville is there are no good/ bad neighborhoods they are all mixed together, which was really frustrating for us when we were looking at houses (we looked at about 40 before we found one).
Awesome! So how long have you and your husband been together? If I may ask? We are looking for an apartment. Wow, so Spring Lake is really that bad? We were actually looking at an apartment in that area which was like 3 miles from the post (Village on the Lake). It looked pretty decent to me. But thats from what I've seen online so..looks may be deceiving. It is just my husband and I so we aren't looking for anything to big, just a decent area close to Bragg. Thanks for all of your help! I really appreciate it!
We are in Bragg too, been here for two months. My opinion of it hasn't changed a bit, I still hate it. If you got on the wait list, when you do get to Bragg, go straight to the neighborhood center for the neighborhood you chose to live in ( on post that is). They might be able to find you a house faster than the wait list.
We will be married for 8 years next month. We were not going to look in spring lake at all from what we had heard and from when we were here before but we figured we'd give it the benefit of the doubt, after like 3 houses we decided no way. I know stuff happens everywhere but it seems like they are always in the news. We had friends that lived in Chason Ridge and they never had any problems, it's off of skibo which is where all of the shopping etc is. Not the greatest main road but they liked those apartments. I'll look through all of the info i have and try to give you some more suggestions!
Understandable! I'm going to go through my info tonight, but if you find any and want an idea of the area let me know!! I understand how hard it is to look for places when you don't know about the area!
You are amazing! lol...Sean, my husband, threw these areas about..Hope Mills, Aberdeen and Pine Forest, any of these places decent? Honestly, I can't thank you enough! This will be my first move so I am a bit nervous. Not that you could tell though I am sure...lol
How funny my husbands name is Sean too! Hope Mills is nice, I've heard Aberdeen is nice but have never been there, kinda a drive to post i believe and I've never heard of Pine Forest, do you mean Pinehurst? If so that is about 45 min-1 hr to post (well from where a friend of mine lives). Very nice though. Sanford is nice (the parts I've seen), we were going to look there but we started close to post a slowly moved out from there. This was my 3rd PCS and I still was trying to find any info out before the move so no worries, I've been there!!
Haha..thats funny! Spelled the same way and all! Hmm, maybe it was Pinehurst...I looked that up and isn't it a golf club? Anyways, I was doing some more research yesterday and I think I really like the Hope Mills and Raeford areas (not finding much in the way of apartments, which we would prefer, but have found nice rental houses). The only problem with those are, Sean, may have to use Skibo to get onto post (he didn't really want to do that). But google maps is only showing one way to get onto post (towards the north)...is there another entrance south of the post too? As far as Fayetteville goes...I know its a hit or miss type of deal, but what are some general areas there that we shouldnt even bother looking in? THANKS!!
If you want to consider rental houses I have some good websites for you. For us it was down to hope mills & raeford as well. There is the Chicken Rd. gate which would be the gate you go in if you live in Raeford. It takes about 20 min with that gate. You could also go in the Reily gate but it would take a little longer. Avoid Bragg blvd, Murchinson Rd areas for sure! I'm still looking at websites but we don't really have many apartments bookmarked because we were looking at houses so we could have a yard for the dogs!
I had gotten on the wait list back in August (supposely 3 mo. wait), now I called n they said the wait time is 5 months, nothing until March. Things have changed and we're moving there in Dec. too, so I'm hoping once we show up they'll have something for us. Looking for a good place to live off post seems hard, considering all the good/bad areas...not looking forward to that. But we'll have to have a back up plan. This is information about off post areas is very helpful!
Oh goodness...we got on the wait list in Oct...and have only moved up the list a few notches. I don't understand why we could only apply for housing on post 90 days out if the wait list is for 5 months. But anyways, we will probably rent something small until housing on post opens up to us. Which neighborhood did you apply for? And I agree it is very hard to find a place off post that is in a decent area. Good luck! Let me know if I can help or if you've found something! Hope all is well!
I will be moving to fayetteville in Dec as well. =) I really wuold like to meet some new people who know what im going through. Im extremely exicited and nervous bout this move. Ive moved alot in my life but this is the most nerve wreking one so far. Im scared that i dnt know as much as i need to about what its gon be like... HELP!?
