My boyfriend left for his OSUT today, he hasn't arrived at Ft. Benning yet (that I know of anyway) and I know his training will last 14 weeks. But I had a friend who had basic then AIT and got a graduation after 9 weeks of basic & before he started AIT. Is that the same for people who are doing OSUT? I'm just a little. confused about how it works & my boyfriend was going to talk to his recruiter before he left but never did so some of my questions went unanswered. If someone could answer that I would much appreciate it.
It's when they go to BCT and have their AIT in the same place. As far as having a graduation, from what I understand they may get a small break between BCT and their AIT. It would depend on the command on when they would do the graduation for them. I've heard most in OSUT get their graduation after their whole training was over, and in between they had a small ceremony.
The only difference between OSUT and AIT is location of MOS schools. Someone correct me if I'm wrong
For Cav Scout and, I believe, Infantry (both of which do OSUT), there is a family day at the end of what would be BCT. At least for Cav Scout, there is a little ceremony so you can see what your soldier has been doing and then they release him into your care for the weekend. They are not allowed to drink and are not supposed to drive. Of course, it almost goes without saying, that drugs are verboten. You return them back to the base at about 2:00 on Sunday and then they resume their training. The big graduation is at the end of OSUT. For your BF that will mean getting his blue cord.
The actual timing may vary a little for Infantry, as I am only intimately familiar with Cav Scout, but that is the basic thing. I'm not sure if they will release your BF to you, it may have to be a family member. Hopefully somebody whose BF has been through Infantry OSUT will chime in on that part.
I was amazed how much my son changed in the first 9 weeks and then even more by the end of OSUT. I think you will be amazed too. They walk different and talk different. It really does change the way they are.
Thank you guys so much for your info. I've read one thing here, and different things there. His family is supposed to be coming to family day too as far as I know, so hopefully if they weren't going to let him out to my care, that if his family is there it will be different. I've heard family day is open to girlfriend's too but that may be different at every base. Now i just have to sit and wait for letters to start coming in with details. I really appreciate you replying. It helped a lot.
my husband graduated on dec. 12 from osut at ft. benning.
the way it worked for us was that at the end of the nine week mark he got a 36 hour pass and we went to visit, have dinner, etc. and he was not allowed to drive or go in public out of uniform.
also for us, the last week of the fourteen weeks he had his cell phone back and more privelages. not that it is always the same, but just to give you some hope!
also, i was told they were not allowed to spend the night at a hotel with "girlfriends" but if the family is there he will be released to them for the night. at least that's the way it worked for us since we were not married at the time.
Yeah, I understand that he wouldn't be released to me but we'd probably all be sharing a hotel room anyway. Thanks for all of the Help & the cell phone thing does give me hope. I have to get him one now lol.
So...when are they considered actual Soldiers. After BCT or after the entire OSUT. The separate the BCT with family weekend after they get their beret. Then they have the two phases of AIT (school) so I'm confused.
