Weapons aren't allowed in dorms/barracks--they have to be registered with the Provost Marshall and stored in a weapons room.
If you live on post in housing, you register your weapon with Provost Marshall and either store it in your residence or in their weapons room depending on their post policy.

ALL weapons.. competitive , hunting or self defense fall under the same regs.

so is it very hard to get it set up to be able to store things? and who would i talk to about it once i get based? and what about if i get stationed overseas?

this may be a dumb question but would you trust that they are safe when stored there or should i make sure to buy lockable cases?

You would contact the AF equivalent of the provost marshall. This is the person in charge of base security.

Getting stationed overseas can complicate things for weapons. You would probably be OK with a bow but some countries (e.g., England) may have issues with you bringing guns into the country (rifles or pistols) as that country has outlawed all but shotguns.

On whether you should get a locking case, it's a judgement call on your part but do you feel safe putting your expensive weapon in a common room that others can get into? There is a old question of "who watches the watchers?" Keep that in mind when storing anything on base.

dont forget you also have to comply with state regulations for transporting and storing weapons, beyond whatever they have for military regs.

moving to places like CT in that regard sucks.
