living with my husband during AITGo ![]() | New ![]() | Find ![]() | Notify ![]() | Tools ![]() | Reply ![]()

My husband called last weekend and told me I could live with him during AIT. I obviously was sooooooooo excited. He asked me to go to the recruiters office and find out what I needed to do. So I went the following monday. The recruiter said there was nothing I could do That my Husband had to do it all. THen I was looking online and it said he had to be in for 20 weeks before He could live with us. So I have three questions. 1) If my Husband is in for 19 weeks and two days will they make an exception? 2) Will we live on base or do I have to find an apartment off base? 3) What exactly does my husband have to do?

Find out where he is going to AIT and call the post. They should be able to help seeing as how they deal with questions like these a lot. You may have to play phone tag a little bit but eventually you should be pointed in the right direction.

the recruiter is correct everything must be done by your DH. he has to request that an exception be made. just becuase he was told at Basic training that you could live there does NOT mean the school will approve it. If they do not, then moving there would be out of pocket and you would not qualify for on base housing. he may or may not get permission to move in with you off base. It's been my experience that seldom do they make exceptions. when he arrives at school he needs to ask. There can be no freedom without sacrifice

If lets say he doesn't get permission. Is it worth moving down? Will he get weekend passes or night passes?

It will honestly depend on how AIT is going. They can be allowed to be off but if someone screws up that is quickly taken away. If you move there it is all at your own expense. When he gets the orders the military will only pay from where you are suppose to be at not where you are now. This includes the HHG, MALT & Per Diem.

NWIP is right, it all depends on the school as well as if they are allowed any liberty. My husband was only able to get a weekend pass as long as he passed the PT test. There were times they were black passed because someone messed up and the whole dorm had to pay because of it. So it would all really depend on you if it would be worth all that money because it would all come out of pocket. Then to top it all off when he PCs to his first duty station they will only move the stuff from where it's supposed to be not where it will be.

1. Not likely...they do it that way intentionally most times to avoid having a lot of spouses travel with. 2. IF you're somehow given PCS orders, then you still won't qualify for housing based on what I've seen at most installations, so I would plan on having to rent a place in town. If you travel there on your own that would still apply. IMO, unless you're really financially stable, it's not worth it to spend all that money making such a short-term move when he may not be able to see you much at all.

1) nope....it has to be 20 weeks plus (per JFTR) my husbands original orders for his AIT was 19 weeks 6 day and it was still a no go until his orders were fixed. 2) After DH's orders were fixed we were able to live in housing because we had a child. Our other friends that didnt have children had apartments. 3) He would have to go to his command. Just from my experience, my husband has had to take care of everything (except when he was deployed).
For us (and this was because it was over 20 weeks) it was worth moving. It was extra time for our family to spend together. At the time he originally had orders for Korea and we took advantage of anytime we could spend together as a family. As for weekend passes/night passes. Like the others have said, its going to depend on his command and how the other at AIT act. Once my husband had a weekend pass and we got home a day early. A few of the guys messed up and they all got punished.
